During his 20 years with a Kennebunk, Maine newspaper the author wrote many editorials and personal columns, the latter including the 53 pieces in this collection. Distributor decal inside front cover. Light soil to cover, with rear cover slightly more affected. Interior clean, tight, and unworn.

Scranton, Pennsylvania: International Textbook Company, 1904 International Correspondence School textbook, part of a series, and containing the instruction papers, examination questions, and keys used. The chapters compiled in this text were originally published by The Colliery Engineer Company. Most of this text is dedicated to masonry. Diagrams and illustrations in masonry and geometry sections. Exterior Good -, with heavy rubbing to corners (cloth worn through to boards) and spine edges (loss of 1/4" at head and tail). Interior Very Good +, clean and tight.

New York: The F.M. Lupton Publishing Company Decorative Cloth. Good-/No Jacket. No date; circa 1900. Rather predictable romance of the period, with beautiful, swooning heroine, sublimated passions, betrayals, tragic death, etc. Typical inferior-quality Lupton binding and paper are fragile, but holding. Heavy rubbing to cover extremities; corners bumped; deterioration of cover cloth along spine gutters and 1/4" of rear cover fore edge; light cover fade/discoloration. Browning of text pages; prior owner name front endpaper. Interior otherwise clean and tight.

New York: McGraw-Hill Book Company, 1952 Black cloth. SIGNED by the author on front endpaper. An account by the Melrose, Massachusetts native about his undercover experiences in the late 1940's. Illustrated with black-and-white photograph plates, including frontispiece. Three Appendices in rear: "A Short Glossary of Communist Terms," "The Communist and the Liberal," and a short explanation of the Smith Act and the indictment of twelve Communist Party leaders. Cloth of front board is splotchy with some patches of fabric darker black than the rest. Spine lettering rubbed, faded, and not readable from a distance. Irregular dark drop stain (? black ink) on spine over part of author's name. Prior owner gift inscription dated 1952 penned on inside front cover. Interior otherwise clean, tight, and unworn.

Hardwick, Massachusetts: Self-published/Athol Press, 2001 Illustrated glossy card covers. In 1998, members of the Hardwick 4-H Horse Club began interviewing older residents of town and documenting the experiences related to them. Eventually other students became involved in this community project. Stories were printed in the local newspaper, Ware River News, before being collected into this volume by the editor. With many black-and-white photographs of the interviewees and reproductions of vintage historic photographs. Front cover appears to have had an unfortunate encounter with a cat, as it bears some irregular pressure marks (not scraped or torn) accompanied by several dents/punctures. A few of the puncture marks extend through to Table of Contents. Upper third of title (first) page is clipped away, presumably to remove prior owner information. Interior otherwise clean, tight, and unworn.

Apparent first edition of this travel guide of the period, part of a series although no specific reference to such. Frontispiece black-and-white photograph reproduction of Michelangelo's David is the only illustration. Light-to-moderate rubbing to cover extremities. Spine sunned; moderate loss and darkening of gilt lettering.Thin black mark about 3/4 inch on rear cover. Few minute pinholes (insect damage) to front gutter. Prior owner attractive bookplate affixed to inside front cover. Prior owner inscription, date at upper front endpaper. Otherwise clean, tight, and unworn.

The University of the State of New York, Albany, 1990, 1990 Bulletin No. 467, New York State Museum. Illustrated with black and white drawings. Although this printing includes a random access key for plant identification using a personal computer, the rear pocket and disk--not necessary as far as the book's usefulness--were not included.

With original black-and-white diagrams and photographs. Tiny portion of gilt cover design chipped away; portions of cover edges rodent-nibbled. Water-stain to fore edge/ margins only of pp. 1-42, with some scarring where pages separated. Interior otherwise clean and tight.

Illustrated with several full-page tissue-guarded engravings, including frontispiece of Ulverston Sands, and numerous smaller engravings/reproductions within text. Map precedes text. Exterior Fair-to-Good/Interior Very Good Heavy wear to corners, bumped and worn through to boards. Loss of 1/4" at head of spine. Rear spine edge deteriorating with split and some loss at top, 1/2" split alongside 1" section of cloth missing from lower cover edge. Cloth faded and with a couple of very small spot stains. Front hinge paper about three-quarters split and delicate, but holding rear hinge paper starting. Symmetrical horizontal crease (inside front cover) and pressure-mark (front endpaper) at center, of unknown origin. Text clean and tight. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall

Moderate-to-heavy wear to spine edges, including 1/2" closed tear to upper rear spine and 1/8" closed tear to tail of spine; spine and small portion of rear cover cloth sunned. Front spine hinge paper partially broken and re-glued; pages age-browned. Clean and tight.

Garden City, New York: Doubleday & Company, Inc., 1981 A project of the National Historical Society. Four companion volumes full of Civil War photographs and descriptions. Volumes I, III, and IV are Book Club Editions, with vinyl-type binding; Volume II (matching the ISBN shown here) is a first edition with cloth cover and better quality text paper. All dust jackets are lightly-to-moderately worn at extremities with the exception of Volume IV, which has a 2" x 3" crease/tear patch of damage--tape-repaired from within--at the lower rear corner.
