Description:
1952. Full Calf, Cloth Slipcase. Very Good. A thick patent application and associated documents relating to a novel, even bizarre, innovation in aviation. 4to. 31 by 24 cm. 404 pp., followed by attachments of approximately 80 pp. Copiously illustrated with black and white photographs and line drawings. The invention was for a four wheel track system, or caterpillar track system, that would allow airplanes to be run over rough terrain on the ground. Essentially it was to be the equivalent of a seaplane in terms of alternative landing and take off venues. The utility of such a functionality is clear in flying to remote areas, especially at a time when commercial aviation was much more limited than it is today, and while not spoken of in the document, it would have a military applicability as well. The patent was in fact acted upon by Bonmartini. Bonmartini was a company with roots in the 1920s and was a major innovator in Italian aviation.

Kalamazoo, MI: Henderson-Ames Co. Press, 1910. First Edition. Wraps. Very Good . Folio, 34 by 25.5 cm. 134 pp. Plus separate cover letter and order form. With 24 pages of full color to the costumes or objects (the models are photographed and their faces are in black and white even when the costume is shown in color). 22 additional pages with one color, red, in addition to black and white (these are showing collars). The costumes are fantastical, some of them with a sinister or strange air, some with ancient associations, and all, without exception, goofy. The costumes can also range from ecclesiastic or biblical to pagan, academic to martial. Almost all are depicted head to toe and with actual photographed faces, although these would appear to have been pasted onto the costume, with the actual persons not photographed modeling the garments. (An early photo-shopping, if you will.) Also peddled are banners, painted scroll backdrops, swords, spears, wands, torcheres, masks, harps, minute books… Read More

Description:
London: Thomas M'Lean, Plates dated 1826 to 1830. Watermarks indicating 1829. First edition. Half Morocco. . Very Good. Extra-illustrated with three pencil drawings and one watercolor by Alken. Folio, 36 by 26 cm. 42 hand-colored soft ground etchings within the collection proper, which plays on the word "Idea" to tease out all sorts of humorous unpleasantness and mishaps concomitant with foxhunting. The use of a word or phrase to lend a loose cohesion to an anthology of caricature illustrations was a convention Alken relied on time and again. The larger format of these illustrations makes this anthology especially appealing, plus the color of the hand-coloring is quite rich and vibrant here. Also, this particular collection is surprisingly uncommon. Six institutional copies noted on OCLC First Search (Yale, Art Institute, Transylvania, Clark, London, Huntington), none of course with the original artwork by Alken.

Description:
New York: Harper & Brothers, 1948. First Edition. Cloth, with Quarter Morocco Slipcase and Chemise. Fine/Very Good Plus. This is Wilder's first novel after his string of big hits, and instant classics, on Broadway. Like the plays, though, Wilder is venturesome in approach, here embracing the hoary form of the epistolatory novel but applying it in a highly original manner. As the title might suggest, this novel is a retellng of the story of Julius Caesar, his times and the society he occupied and dominated. Wilder might not be strongly associated with historical fiction, but he was in fact a devoted classicist, and this foray into historical fiction found a receptive audience -- the novel sold extremely well upon its publication. Deservedly, one might add. Being a virtuosic stylist, Wilder avoids the stiltedness that afflicts so many attempts to capture Ancient Rome, and this work deserves to be placed alongside the two modern classics of Robert Graves who depicted a slightly later… Read More

Description:
Milano: G. Ricordi & C. Editori, 1937. First edition. Wraps. Very Good. Scarce libretto of a strange Futurist one act opera, with talking a tree (Euphobia), shrubs and airplanes among the characters, some of which are actually human --aviators, soldiers and natives -- even if they intone like actors in a Greek tragedy. This oddball propagandistic work, more an oratorio than opera, celebrates war ("sweet war"), aviation and territorial conquest -- the things that cast a spell on so many Futurists, and which were the essence of Fascism. Three copies located on OCLC of this libretto brochure, at Berkeley, Harvard, and one in Italy. (There are copies of the printed music elsewhere). The work was first performed at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in 1937. 8vo. 20 by 13 cm. 23 pp. Dedicated to Mussolini. Pavolini, like many adherents of the Futurist Movement, came to embrace Fascism. In his case, he had a brother who was a prominent member of the Fascist heirarchy. After the war,… Read More
