Description:
Manitou Springs, CO: Ute Iron Springs Photo. Gallery, 1900. No stated edition. Unbound. Photo is very good; back of mount is browned and rubbed. Hiestand, J.G.. Mounted original photo (cabinet card), printed in sepia. Mount is ca. 8 x 4 1/2 inches. The caption, hand-lettered within the negative, appears at the lower left. This put-upon and soulful burro is laden with explosives, bottles of rum, a jug, frying pans, shovels, a rope, and more. The same burro shows up in other Hiestand photos and postcards (often misidentified as a mule), but this particular view is uncommon. Hiestand was the official photogapher of the Pikes Peak cog railway, which carried tourists up from Manitou Springs. Can be sent outside the US for less than the default shipping rate.

Auction catalogue of 175 lots: "the complete writings of distinguished American, English and French authors in finely bound library editions." Ruppert was a brewing magnate, US Congressman, and owner of the New York Yankees (1915-1939) during their storied heyday. In 1919 he purchased Babe Ruth's contract from the Boston Red Sox. Without knowing the details, I wonder if he sold his library the following year in order to concentrate on (and help finance?) his baseball interests. Ruppert is in baseball's Hall of Fame and the Red Sox Hall of Shame. Uncommon. Can be sent outside the US for less than the default shipping rate. .
