Venetia [Venice]: nelle case de figlioli di Aldo [I Manuzio], 1545.. Fourth Aldine printing. Small folio. (122) ff. Eighteenth century full pigskin, gilt lettering to the spine, all edges green, a single leaf in book three lacking but the text supplied in consummate manuscript, predating or contemporary with the binding. Faint dampstain cutting across the upper corner of the last 16 leaves at the gutter, also evident on both pastedowns, a few marks to the boards, an attractive copy. Baldessare Castiglione (1478-1529) was very much a man of his day, educated in a Humanist school in Milan in the 1490s where he also served at the court of Duke Ludovico Sforza. He returned to his native Mantua on the death of his father at the age of 21, whereupon he entered the service of the local marquis, Francesco Gonzaga, for the next five years. (xxii), 321, (1) pp. Contemporary full panelled calf, neatly rebacked to style, spine with raised bands, red gilt lettered label, old engraved armorial bookplate of an E.C. Fanshawe to the front endpaper, an older ownership inscription to the head of title page. One full page engraving on the verso of the last preliminary leaf. Small loss to leather on upper board, minor wear to front hinge though sound, light rubbing to extremities, a good copy. One of the finest pastoral poems in Italian Literature, first published in 1590 and in this translation in 1647. Wing G2177.

Attractive folding map of London and the surrounding area showing the extents from Hatfield down to Coulsdon and Hornchurch across to Maidenhead, original wash colour marking out the county boundaries, the map peppered with decorative vignette views of principle places. Original green cloth covers with blindstamped lettering and decoration. Subtly reinforced with tissue at a few points on the verso, slight wear to the covers, a very good example of a fragile item. Hyde, 40, (2). First published as a supplement to the Illustrated London News in 1855, this was the first separately published edition. As Hyde notes, it was issued flat or folded as here.

A celebrated work first published in the same year as "De Animi Immortalitate". Browne's meagre output is not matched by his reputation; Johnson describing him as "one of the first wits of the country, [who] got into Parliament and never opened his mouth". William Hay was M.P. for Seaford and lived at Glyndebourne, producing a number of essays, poems and translations.
