Description:
London: Tinder :Press, 2017. First UK ("True" 1st). Hardcover. Fine/Fine. From the publisher: "An extraordinary memoir - told entirely in near-death experiences - from one of Britain's best-selling novelists, for fans of Wild, When Breath Becomes Air, and The Year of Magical Thinking. We are never closer to life than when we brush up against the possibility of death. I Am, I Am, I Am is Maggie O'Farrell's astonishing memoir of the near-death experiences that have punctuated and defined her life. The childhood illness that left her bedridden for a year, which she was not expected to survive. A teenage yearning to escape that nearly ended in disaster. An encounter with a disturbed man on a remote path. And, most terrifying of all, an ongoing, daily struggle to protect her daughter - for whom this book was written - from a condition that leaves her unimaginably vulnerable to life's myriad dangers. Seventeen discrete encounters with Maggie at different ages, in different locations, reveal a whole life… Read More

Description:
New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1941. First American. Poor. A poor copy in blue cloth with gilt titles It appears that some liquid (coffee?) was spilled on the book, resulting not only in some staining, but also in causing many of the pages to be stuck together, (see photos) They might possibly be separable by steaming, but in its present condition, many pages cannot be read without tearing them apart The primary interest for this volume, therefore is the personal bookplate on the front pastedown of the famous actor Douglas Fairbanks Jr So I've priced it solely for its provenance, and not for the book itself The original dust jacket has been tipped in the rear of the book It is a photo album of pictures of England as it was before WWII and was published in the midst of the Battle of Britain (1940-41) as many of the buildings shown were being destroyed by German bombing.

London: Duckworth Overlook, 2018. First. Hardcover. Near fine/Near fine. From the publisher: "Highly acclaimed author and managing director of The Times Literary Supplement, James MacManus, creates a compelling historical novel that brings to life an unbelievable but true love story set during the Second World War. In 1942, Cork-born Kay Summersby's life is changed forever when she is tasked with driving General Eisenhower on his fact-finding visit to wartime London. Despite Eisenhower's marriage to Mamie, the pair takes an immediate liking to one another and he gifts Kay a rare wartime luxury: a box of chocolates. So begins a tumultuous relationship that against all military regulation sees Kay travelling with Eisenhower on missions to far flung places before the final assault on Nazi Germany. She becomes known as "Ike's shadow" and in letters Mamie bemoans his new obsession with 'Ireland'. That does not stop him from using his influence to grant Kay US citizenship and rank in the US army, drawing… Read More

Description:
Chicago: The University of Chicago Press, 2005. First printing. Softcover. Fine. Peggy Macnamara. From the publisher: "Recent estimates put the world's insect population at more than forty million species. Here in Illinois, the numbers are equally awesome: seventeen thousand species call the state home, among them four thousand types of flies; fifteen hundred types of grasshoppers, cicadas, and aphids; five thousand types of beetles; two hundred types of ants, wasps, and bees; and two thousand types of butterflies and moths. With so much entomological diversity here in the Midwest, Illinois residents needn't look further than their own backyards to discover the rich and secret world of insects and spiders. Marrying art and entomology, Illinois Insects and Spiders is a unique introduction to local biodiversity. Artist Peggy Macnamara celebrates the state's burgeoning insect and spider populations with twenty-seven color plates of beautiful renderings of numerous species, organized both taxonomically… Read More
