The First UK Printing published by Stephen Swift in 1911 (nd). The BOOK is in Very Good++ condition. A relatively cheap production from a small publisher. Moderate pushing at the spine ends. Gilt titling slightly dulled. A little loss at the upper spine hinge. The lower front corner is rounded and may be a production fault or how it was actually published. Some very light age related markings and wear. The binding remains tight. The text block is only lightly toned. One previous owner's name to the front pastedown. Blind stamp 'Presentation copy' to the title page. Housed in a custom solander box with gilt titling by Temple Bookbinders. Published by the ill-fated Stephen Swift (aka Charles Granville) who ended up imprisoned for bigamy and his publishing company liquidated in 1912. This first printing is only one of 500 copies. This edition was followed by two further reprints of 500 copies in January and in May/June 1912. The title was then not republished until 1926 after the author's death, when her… Read more

A small penned mark to the lower text-block. Very light toning to the text-block. The yellow top-stain and sliver titling remain bright. The book has been signed by the author to the front blank end-paper : 'For Willie Kay, with all good wishes, Truman Capote'. Harper Lee worked together with Capote's on this true crime novel, with Lee acting as his 'assistant researchist' and editing the final draft of the book. Upon its publication in 1965 in the USA, Capote failed to acknowledge Lee's contributions to the book, after which their relationship was never the same. Description:
An unknown printing published by Faber and Faber - no date. In as far as I can determine this title was only published with its distinctive grey front cover, with red and yellow lettering, in hardback format. I can find no other paperback copy for sale in this format. This, combined with the fact that this volume has no publication data, such as date, no title page and does not include the plates of the published volume, leads me to conclude this is probably a proof copy. This copy came with a number of other volumes on WWI from the library of Norman Hancock who also wrote on his experiences of the First World War, notably in A Martial Medley (1931) along with David Jones, Eric Partridge and several others. This connection with Jones further makes me think it likely this is a proof copy sent by the publishers to Hancock. The BOOK is wraps format and is in Very Good+ condition. A generally very clean copy throughout. Some light creasing to the front cover. The spine at some point has had clear tape… Read more
