Description:
Moscow: NII Ogiza, 1933. 86, [26] pp.: ill.; 17x12 cm. In original printed wrappers. Spine glued by tape, otherwise very good. First edition. One of 1000 copies. Very rare. This is the first manual on how the model Soviet textbooks had to be designed, constructed and produced. After the 1920s book diversity of styles and print quality was ceased by the resolution 'On the Restructuring of Literary and Artistic Organizations' (1932), the control over book publishing strengthened in all directions. In 1932, the OGIZ Research Institute analyzed polygraphy and design of contemporary printed materials that were published the same year. As a result, lists of flaws were compiled and reports on different types of books were declared by art and book historian Konstantin Kuzminskii (1875-1940). He wrote this scrupulous instruction for all contributors to textbook creation that includes the responsibilities of editors, authors, artists, especially the graphic department of a publishing house. In particular,… Read More

Moscow: N.K.P.S. Transpechat', 1925. 31x23 cm. In original illustrated wrappers. Very good and mostly clean. #8 stamp 'People's Commissariat of Foreign Trade' on front cover, few stains; #9 uncut, pencil marks on front cover; #20 minor rusty stains, ink mark on p.1; #22 water stain on lower margin, small fragment of back cover lost. Soviet periodical about contemporary achievements and inventions in tech worldwide, published in 1923-1926. The magazine was edited by Lev Liberman and Sergei Pozniakov. The edition became one of the tribunes for Constructivist principles of theorist and artist Alexei Gan (1887-1942). He designed impressive constructivist covers, advertisements and the internal layout. Every cover was printed in two colors varying the composition of the title and illustration. Thus all of them were laconic yet impressive, might include geometric components. For example, the covers of issue #22 were devoted to the 1925 International Chess Tournament held in Moscow. Gan complemented the… Read More

Moscow: Der Emes, 1948. 94 pp.: ill. Later binding, original wrappers are preserved. Wrappers soiled and rubbed, otherwise very good. A BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH OF ONE OF THE MOST PROMINENT SOVIET JEWISH ACTORS SOLOMON MIKHOELS (1890-1948). Written by the Soviet art and theatrical critic Yakov Grinval'd, this book traces the life and artistic legacy of the director of the Moscow State Jewish Theatre Solomon Mikhoels. In 1918, Mikhoels joined Alexis Granowsky's Jewish Theater Workshop, which, having moved to Moscow, was transformed into the Moscow State Jewish Theater (1925). At the time, the Soviet Union was implementing the policy on nationalities that encouraged Jews, among others, to pursue and develop their own culture under the aegis of the Soviet State. Against this background, after playing numerous successful roles at the theatre (The Travels of Benjamin III, directed by Alexander Granovsky in 1927; Night at Old Market; directed by Alexander Granovsky in 1925; etc.), Mikhoels was able to travel… Read More

Melekess: Izd. Soveta Kr. kursov po podgotovke zaved. izbami-chital'niami, [1921]. 32 pp. 17x13 cm. In original printed wrappers. Spine repaired with marbled paper, tears of the spine, otherwise very good. First edition. One of 250 copies. Signed by author on the front cover, some author's corrections in the text. Extremely rare provincial edition (Melekess is the small town in Ulyanovsk region) on izba-chital'nia (reading hut or rooms), the main tool in the Soviet campaign of eradication of illiteracy. The book gathered sketches from Skomorokhov's lectures on organizing such cultural centers. For example, the founders had to select special days or hours for women and young men providing them freedom of discussions. The organizers also needed to have a direct connection between reading rooms and the local periodicals. Overall interesting piece of the early Soviet provincial culture. Worldcat doesn't track this edition.

Moscow: Izd. Akademii arkhitektury SSSR, 1940. 159 pp.: ill. 27,5x20,5 cm. In the original illustrated green cloth with decorative composition and lettering. Very good, curious contemporary pencil notes on the front flyleaf (in verse and prose). The unknown inscriber calls the book 'the album that measures human feelings' but then adds 'You could measure the forms, but you can not measure the great in the art: the feelings and the humanity'. First and only issue. One of 6000 copies. Rare. This is the book on the Russian furniture created in the period when the Russian craftsmen were the most independent from European tendencies. In connection with the French revolution, the trade relations between the Russian Empire and France became sharper. As a result, the popular French furniture was banned for mass import. The Russian masters were free to create the new canon and started to use the new types of wood: the curly birch, the black poplar and the bog oak. The book features 36 items (tables,… Read More
