Description:
First American Edition. Two Volume Set. The most famous explorer of his day, Stanley's fame was made by James Gordon Bennett's commission sending him to search for Livingstone. In 1886 Stanley led the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition to rescue Emin Pasha, the governor of Equatoria in southern Sudan. After immense hardship and great loss of life, Stanley met Emin in 1886, discovered the Ruwenzori Range and Lake Edward, then emerged from the interior at the end of 1889. Stanley's famous account of his expedition to relieve Emin Pasha (Eduard Schnitzer), the beleaguered governor of equatorial Sudan, contains some of his most celebrated writing, especially his account of the tortuous 450-mile passage through the dense Ituri rain forest. Stanley's dealings with Emin Pasha, who proved singularly resistant to being 'rescued', his abandonment of his own rear column and his wider motives for his mission have all come under suspicion then and since, but the book remains a classic of African exploration. Limited to 800 copies, this being number 783.Includes four full-page lithographic plates by artist Michael Hafftka; printed on hand-made Japanese paper and protected by fine tissue guards. Signed Hafftka on the colophon. Octavo (7" x 10-1/4"). 53 pp. A stunning work and edition.

In the Penal Colony is one of the best-known short stories by Franz Kafka. Indeed, it's widely regarded as Kafka's most acclaimed and widely discussed shorter work after The Metamorphosis. Kafka wrote In the Penal Colony over a period of two weeks in 1914, while he was at work on his novel, The Trial. He revised the story in 1918, as he was dissatisfied with the story's original ending, and it was published in 1919. Equal parts autobiographical, political, and theological in nature, it's a gripping tale that is as compelling and relevant today as when it was written.

First Edition, Early Printing. In two volumes, complete. Quite rare, especially in this condition. Overall, very good in original publisher's cloth, gilt-decorated front covers and spine. Bindings square and tight with no cocking. Head and foot of spines worn, with chipping on the head of each volume. Boards and interior foxed (although not in a way that detracts from the text, and not nearly as bad as many copies). 4to. Vol. 1, 459 pp.; vol. 2, 478 pp. A great copy of this scarce and seminal work of exploration.
Famous accounting of the travels and explorations of John Stephens and William Catherwood to Central America starting in 1839. This popular work provided the first glimpses of Mayan culture to the public. Based upon the detailed descriptions of Mayan archaeology and the superb illustrations based upon Dagerreotype views and drawings by Catherwood, all future works on the Mayan people were based upon these accounts. Profusely illustrated with 120 engravings, many full-page, plus 2 large… Read More

A highly detailed Utopian fantasy that Wright labored over for years, only to have it posthumously published. The introduction is by Leonard Bacon, the afterward by Sylvia Wright, the author's editor & daughter. Generally considered a "utopian" novel, Islandia describes the journey and adventures of John Lang, a once very proper American college student. Austin Tappan Wright did not just write a novel of adventures in a strange land and civilization; Islandia is a country with a history, towns, cities and streets, its own geography, language, people (and demographics), politics, law and customs, even its virtues and faults.
