Description:
New York: Reynal & Hitchcock, 1938. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION. Original tan cloth, pictorial end-papers; uncut. With copy of article on Gogarty from The New York Times Book Review laid in. Inscribed by Gogarty on flyleaf, "To Ralph H. Gutz, with the best wishes of Oliver St. John Gogarty.". INSCRIBED COPY. First American edition. Gogarty attempts a "geographical history," following the traceable journeys of St. Patrick. His aim in doing so was "by describing the places which the Saint visited and sanctified in our island, to draw from these, as from well-springs, inspirations which shall be truly traditional, pure, and undiluted by modern distractions and fatuous ideas of patriotism; and shall again be as much part and parcel of our race as the rivers, seas, valleys, fields, and mountains are part of our country.".

Minns and Sir George W. Denys. Contemporary inscription to fly-leaf as well as some occasional Greek and Latin marginalia.Originally printed in 1516, this valuable edition of Pausanias' description of Greece is considered by many to be the best edition. It is especially noteworthy for the detailed descriptions and broad array of information on ancient Greece, including its history, geography, and architecture, and has been exceptionally useful in the archaeological exploration of a number of ancient cities, including Olympia, Athens, Delphi and Argolis. Description:
Venice: Roberti, 1763. Text in double columns. Title in red and black, headpieces and small historiated initials. Contemporary limp vellum over paste-paper, with two pairs of ties, spine lettered between double horizontal-rules. An absolutely superb copy with light wear to binding, a few tiny burn-holes to text and very minor foxing, some light penciling on endpapers as well as unobtrusive, old booksellers ink marks. At the request of Cardinal de Richelieu, de Marca composed the De concordia, which first appeared in 1641. De Marca (1594-1662) sought to harmonise the claims of the church and state, allowing greater independence to the secular power. The subject was large and one can find in the book, e.g., a discussion of the so-called Donation of Constantine (pp. 105-07). The book was placed on the Index prohibititorum librorum, and de Marca retracted his views. The author was Archbishop of Toulouse and, for a short time, in the year of his death, Archbishop of Paris.

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1890. First American Edition. With 44 full-page engravings, including frontispieces, plus folded maps in pockets. Original dark green pictorial covers with gilt-stamped spine; a very good copy. First American edition. Controversial and dramatically illustrated, Stanley recounts the mission to rescue Emin Pasha (Eduard Schnitzer) from his turbulent post as governor of Equatorial Sudan. Rising from obscure origins to become the famous explorer, Stanley was chosen to lead four hundred heavily armed men through the Congo and the Ituri rain forest. His troops suffered from disease and hunger, and many died on the journey, and Stanley was ultimately unsuccessful in bringing Emin back to the UK. Despite this failure, his work, In darkest Africa, became a best seller. At first Stanley was showered with awards and honorary degrees, and lectured extensively about his journey. This fame backfired, for the press began reporting accusations that the "rescue" was a front for…

Description:
New York: The Greystone Press, 1939. First American edition. Portrait of author tipped-in on half-title. Original red cloth, dust-jacket lightly sunned at spine and very slightly chipped. First American edition. The present work "constitutes a complete survey, from the point of view of a Frenchman, of the art and craft of literature as it is today." Divided into four parts, it deals with the function of literature in civilization, with the writer in relation to his work, and with the technical and artistic problems of writing. French doctor, essayist, novelist, poet and playwright, Duhamel (1884-1966) earned a licence in science, and then studied medicine. While he found employment in the pharmaceutical industry, he decided to follow his literary aspirations as well. In charge of surgical ambulances during World War I, Duhamel afterwards wrote Vie des martyrs about this experience, which was noted for its compassionate accounts of human suffering. After the war, he gave up medicine and devoted his…
