Most of the illustrations are unattributed, but a couple are by the English painter Edith Scannell (1852-1940), and the illustration of cats on the title page is reminiscent of Louis Wain. DeWolff, Fiske and Company was founded in Boston in 1880 by Perez Morton DeWolfe and Charles F. Fiske. From 1905 the firm became a retail and wholesale book business, renamed DeWolfe and Fiske.
