[64], chromolithographic frontispiece and 7 plates, black & white pictorial title page and numerous text illustrations (some full page), floral patterned endpapers; cr. 4to; teal cloth backed pictorial glazed papered boards, edges slightly worn, with light damp stain to bottom fore-corner of upper board; upper hinge starting, inked gift inscription (dated 1893) on frontispiece recto, a little light foxing and occasional faint soiling; De Wolfe Fiske & Co., Boston, n.d.[c. 1893?]. *Short stories, including The Strange Picture and The Stolen Child. Most of the illustrations are unattributed, but a couple are by the English painter Edith Scannell (1852-1940), and the illustration of cats on the title page is reminiscent of Louis Wain. DeWolff, Fiske and Company was founded in Boston in 1880 by Perez Morton DeWolfe and Charles F. Fiske. From 1905 the firm became a retail and wholesale book business, renamed DeWolfe and Fiske.
