Description:
VII, [1 blank], 264 pp. plus lithographed title-page.Rare first and only Dutch edition of Lindau's description of Japan. Lindau discusses Nagasaki (including Dejima), Manchuria, Edo and Yokohama, with extensive remarks on Japanese politics and culture, including a detailed account of a sumo wrestling match. Writing during the so-called "Bakumatsu" (the late Tokugawa Shogunate), the author devotes three chapters to the Japanese political associations and networks after Commodore Matthew Perry signed the 1854 Treaty of Kanagawa, which would eventually lead to the Meiji Restoration. The tinted lithograph of a house on the title-page explicitly states that is was made after a photograph. A Nagasaki merchant imported a daguerreotype camera to Japan in 1848, but it was only in the 1850s that westerners began making photographs in Japan and most of the early ones are lost. The present lithograph therefore gives us some visual record of one of the earliest photographs. Owner's stamp on title-page. With…

16, VIII, 17-671; XII, 538; 539-1432; VIII, 498 pp. plus title-pages & plates.Best edition (the second, revised and expanded from the first edition of 1850-1853) of an essential standard work on Indonesia, with an extraordinary wealth of information, beautifully illustrated, with much of the text and illustrations by the great German naturalist (Friedrich) Franz Wilhelm Junghuhn (1809-1864), who served the Dutch army in the East Indies as surgeon and scientist from 1835 to 1864. The list of plates (vol. 4, pp. 487-491) is rather difficult to follow: it seems to suggest that some of the plates should be cut up and their figures inserted facing various pages, moreover it calls for Garoet figs. 1-4, while the present copy and all others we know have only Garoet fig. no. 1 (together with other figures in a folding plate). Widaï fig. 1 and Diëng fig. 3 are also never present, as far as we know. Otherwise, the present set includes all plates called for in the list. Bastin & Brommer note two different…

Description:
A rare and unusually massive Palestine souvenir album containing 71 photographs by the renowned studio of Félix Bonfils (1831-85), the French-born photographer who had come to the Levant with General d'Hautpoul in 1860 and remained active in the East. Based in Beirut, Bonfils produced thousands of photographs depicting Palestine, Egypt, Syria, Greece and other parts of the Ottoman Empire. In the early days of western tourism to the Middle East, his works soon became popular as souvenirs. The photographs were available both separately and as customized albums, but sets of this scope were uncommon, very few exceeding fifty images. The sumptuous binding, which the owner would have commissioned, underlines that this was a deluxe souvenir for a more than ordinarily wealthy traveller. It features landscapes and city views, famous sights such as Jaffa Gate (Bab el-Khalil), sites sacred to the three religions (Church of the Holy Sepulchre, Church of the Flagellation, Al-Aqsa Mosque, Mosque of Omar, Wailing…

Description:
[52] pp.The Opusculum de discipulorum officiis, quod enchiridion scholasticorum inscribitur ranks among the rarest yet most influential works of the Dutch teacher and schoolmaster Johannes Murmellius (1480-1517). Murmellius wrote the pamphlet for his own pupils at the Domschule in Münster, whom he wanted to help receive the best possible education. Foundational for this, Murmellius argues, is the good and loving education the young children receive from their loving parents. Murmellius regards the strife for a good education as the fundamental task of all humans, regardless of their birth and status. In fine Latin verses, Murmellius describes knowledge and wisdom as treasures that have the potential to alleviate even those stemming from the lower ranks of society: an intangible possession that cannot be taken away by a tyrant. In chapter after chapter, he spells out the important character traits he wants his pupils to develop: an eagerness to learn, a sharp mind and good memory, health, peace of…

[40], 451, [3], [2 blank] pp.Second, enlarged edition of the autobiography of the influential Remonstrant leader Johannes Wtenbogaert (1557-1644), one of the most eloquent preachers of his age. Wtenbogaert begins with his return to his native Utrecht in 1584, after having studied in Geneva with Theodore Beza. After a period of religious discord in Utrecht, Wtenbogaert moved to The Hague, where he became an influential member of the Remonstrant party and its leader after the death of Arminius in 1609. After the arrest in 1618 of influential Remonstants, including Johan van Oldenbarneveldt and Hugo Grotius, Wtenbogaert fled to Antwerp. He was permitted to return to the Dutch Republic in 1626, after which the autobiography more or less finishes. Bookblock seperated from flyleaves at the front, but the binding otherwise good. Description:
A pastel portrait drawn by the prolific itinerant portraitist John Saunders (1682-ca.1758) at Peterborough in September 1739. Saunders is recorded as active in East Anglia, the Midlands and elsewhere in the mid-18th century. The sitter John Sturges appears in Turkish costume, wearing a white turban with blue feather and a coat with gold trimmings and a fur collar. Saunders probably based it on a 1733 mezzotint drawn and engraved by Francis Kyte (d. 1744) after a painting (or the ink-wash drawing noted below?) by John Vanderbank (1694-1739). The pastel is of interest as an example of mid-18th century depiction of Turkish costume. With a paper label on the back with a manuscript note repeating information from the autograph pencil inscription by Saunders on the front, top right: "Saunders pinxit after Mr. J[oh]n Vanderbank Peterborough Sept. anno d. 1739". Two negligible scratches to surface, otherwise in good condition.l Jeffares, "John Saunders 1682-p. 1758", in: Dictionary of pastellists before 1800…

Description:
48 pp.Rare edition of the famous account of the circumnavigation by Olivier van Noort (1559-1627) in the years 1598 to 1601. Van Noort was the fourth to circumnavigate the globe and the first Dutchman to do so. His predecessors were Magellan, Drake and Cavendish. He left Holland in 1598 with four ships and orders to attack the Spanish and Portuguese and harass them in any way possible. After many adventures Van Noort returned in 1601 with only one ship and only a few dozen of his crew. Those few had survived numerous skirmishes with the Portuguese and Spanish, and attacks by natives at Puerto Deseada and Tierra del Fuego, the former described here as "zeer groot van gestalte" (very large in stature) leading to tales of giants. They suffered from scurvy and survived on penguin meat and ostrich eggs. Van Noort's story was extremely popular and as the first Dutchman to sail round the world he was revered out of national pride, even though his voyage accomplished little. With a 19th-century owner's name on…

Description:
82" [=74], [2] pp.First edition of the journal of the Dutch warship Spiegel, which served as the flagship of Michiel de Ruyter (1607-1676) during an expedition to the coast of Africa, the Caribbean and Newfoundland. At the head of a squadron of twelve ships, the Spiegel had officially been sent to the Mediterranean as a martial exercise against the Barbary pirates. However, its real destination was the coast of West Africa, where the Dutch West India Company (WIC) and the English Company of Royal Adventures were fighting to control the trade in gold and ivory. In an expedition that was secretly planned by anti-English members of the States General, De Ruyter was to recapture the lost African possessions. After a diversion along the Spanish coast, the Dutch set sail to Africa where, aided by local soldiers in service of the WIC, De Ruyter retook all lost possessions. For the next mission, he was ordered to recapture Nieuw-Nederland (the New Netherlands: parts of modern New York, New Jersey and…

104 pp.First edition of the account of the charting voyage by Maerten Gerritsz. Vries (1589-1646) to the north of Japan, together with the popular account of a Dutch West India Company voyage to Chile under Hendrik Brouwer (1581-1643). Brouwer, one of the directors of the Dutch West India Company, acted as the commander of a fleet of six ships, specially sent to the western coast of South America to activate the trade between the Dutch and the natives. During this voyage, which resulted in the first place in a better knowledge of that coast, Brouwer died at Chiloe and was buried at Valdivia in August 1643. Appended to that journal is the very important account of a charting voyage to Japan. That same year (1643) Maerten Gerritsz. Vries, got "instructions from Governor Van Diemen ... to examine the countries to the north of Japan and to assess their economic and trading potential, particularly with regard to mineral wealth" (Howgego). [191] ll. Including paste-downs and about 55 blanks.A manuscript ship's journal kept by Edward George Morse (Bromyard 1805?-Deal post 1850?), who no doubt served, among other functions, as the ship's surgeon. Morse made his earliest dated entries in April 1831 at the island Mauritius in the Indian Ocean and others at Madagascar and its surrounding islands from May to August 1831. Morse provides extensive notes on the natural history, topography and people of the Seychelles, Madagascar and the neighbouring islands, and provides detailed maps of many of the islands and coastal areas, along with a few coastal profiles. The two manuscripts are written in a single album of laid paper. Morse used it 1828 to take notes when he attended the London lectures on anatomy and blood circulation by the innovative surgeon Joseph Constantine Carpue, who had pioneered facial reconstructive surgery by introducing ancient Indian techniques. He was famous for illustrating his lectures with chalk drawings, which no doubt…
