The basis of Bristol's collection derived from the personal collection of Professor Crundall Punnett, acquired with the intermediary help of Jack Hillier, together with both earlier and later acquisitions.

Little, Brown, Boston and Toronto, 1965; 216 x 230mm paperback, pp 139; 90 plates in monochrome or colour and with six figures in the text; slight rubbing of the binding and with a minor crease on the front board but in good condition throughout. Hillier, a noted art critic and then one of the leading scholars on Japanes art, points out that the concept of "drawings", other than in the form of preliminary sketches for a painting or print, is foreign to Japanese art, unlike with Western art. Nevertheless, he argues, and allowing for somewhat arbitrary selection, it's possible to class a body of Japanese works together and appraise them as one would Western drawings. This is the subject of this innovative and useful book which also includes 38 short biographies of the artists featured, and a bibliography.

Thomas Nelson, London, 1934, first edition; 4to, 180 x 230mm; pp viii, 9-177; fawn cloth boards titled and decorated gilt on the front, green cloth spine; illustrated with 181 photographs of acting in the various plays or ballets in the book; very good copy. ... ... ... Jelf was a senior judge, Master of the Supreme Court at the time of writing and later King's Remembrancer, and the book consists of a series of ballets to be performed by children and which were in fact performed extensively all over England by the time of publication. The stories are not, however, scripts as the performances were intended to be given with a reader while the children mime and dance to what is being read although, as Jelf ponts out, it's fairly straightforward to repurpose the content for the children to speak the lines.

Cornish Brothers, Birmingham, 1880, [first edition, privately printed]; 8vo, pp [viii], (9)-577; good later binding in half brown pigskin, green marbled boards and end papers, spine decorated gilt and with raised bands, top edge gilt; lacks half title; slight browning or dust marking in places but nevertheless a very good copy of what was to become a minor Victorian classic, the story set in the time of Charles I. Shorthouse, 1834-1903, came from a Quaker manufacturing family in Birmingham (actually Edgbaston), duly entering the family business. However, he and his wife moved to the Church of England in 1861 identifying themselves with the "Oxford School of High Churchmen". He also began to suffer from epilepsy and duly left his industrial work to write, spending the decade to about 1876 working on "John Inglesant".
