Description:
Orion, Oct 2000. Paperback. Oh, the blessings of being an author with too much time on his hands. I can just picture Ian Rankin sitting in the house (farm? cottage?) he and his wife bought in rural Dordogne, having whizzed through the manuscript for yet another increasingly well-written John Rebus novel and - having left behind all other employment across the British Channel and neither inclined to carpentry nor gardening - feeling his mind growing restless, in need of occupation. Now, wouldn't you have started looking for another outlet for your creative energy had you been in his spot?\nThe result of the aforementioned process, which Rankin describes in this compilation's foreword, were three thrillers written under the pseudonym Jack Harvey (Jack for his newborn son, Harvey for his wife's maiden name); now finally back in print and reunited in a single volume.\nJack Harvey's career began with "Witch Hunt," the story of a female assassin - the title character - pursued by various agents of the… Read more

Description:
Prentice Hall, Jun 2000. 2. CD-ROM. This book gives detailed information about the API and the general structure of the J3D scene graph, but no explanations or examples. If you don't know about 3D graphics then keep your money - it refers to 4x4 transformation matrices, quaternions and the like. It also has a number of errors (in the one and only example and the 3DCanvas) - probably because it was written before the API was finalized. Apart from that, all the detail a developer could need without the tedious 'how to write a program' which pads most books and annoys the more experienced programmer. Excellent overall.

Description:
O'Reilly Media, Inc, USA, Jul 2001. Paperback. I find this a good "cook book" -the sort you need in a rush, to remind you the details. Although some items were rather too-commonly used to include in a reference (eg: "Q:You need to sleep for a while; A: use Thread.sleep()"), in general the tips were very useful.\nI would recommend this for the novices and the experienced alike, to help free your mind with the details of Java coding intricacies, and let you worry about more important design /testing aspects. Personally I found this very useful in graphics and internationalization, the things that I do not use everyday work.

Description:
Addison Wesley, Feb 2000. Pap/Cdr. Paperback. The original "Design Patterns" by Gamma, Helm, et al proved a bestseller, spawning a number of derivative titles as well as a new edition. "Java Design Patterns" takes the 23 patterns created by the original designers and implements them for the benefit of Java programmers. The format in this book is to introduce the pattern with a description of the situation it describes. All the UML diagrams used in the book were created in Jvision and each is implemented as a complete working visual Java program with variations as a Visual Slick Edit project; all of it is supplied on the accompanying CD.\n The point of patterns is to short-circuit the design process for programmatic problems solved by programmers many times before. What you're doing is taking the program design process up a level: just as classes encapsulate program components, so patterns encapsulate and generalise common interactions between components. For Java programmers, a pattern book using… Read more

Prentice Hall, Oct 1997. Pap/Cdr. Paperback. This is the best Java book I've read yet. It is well-written and well-organized, and goes deeper than just a surface discussion; it is better written, more comprehensive, and more practical than Sridharan's Advanced Java Networking. In fact, the authors take the reader through the process of creating a full-fleged shared whiteboard and chat tool.\n\rIf you are developing an advanced networking Java project, you will find this book enjoyable and useful.\n\r Michael Brundage\n\r Infrared Processing Analysis Center, Caltech

John Wiley & Sons, Feb 1996. Paperback. Java Sourcebook is an excellent java book for people who want to start learning java language. Ed Anuff, the author of Java Sourcebook, explains the basic of java language very well. However, he did not do very well in his code examples. There are a couple mistakes in his examples and sometimes his codes did not make the material that he had explained before became clearer.

Description:
O'Reilly Media, Inc, USA, May 1997. 2. Paperback. The 3rd edition of the well-known reference "Java In a Nutshell" covers the essential APIs of Java 1.2, including networking, security, input and output, and basic language and utility classes. Due to the size of the Java 1.2 API, graphics and graphical user interface classes are now examined in a volume called "Java Foundation Classes in a Nutshell" and server-side and enterprise programming are detailed in "Java Enterprise in a Nutshell".\nThough primarily a reference, the book starts off with a thorough, fast-paced introduction to Java, exploring all the key topics including syntax, Object-Oriented programming, security, beans and tools. These discussions are brief and very information-dense but if you are buying this book to learn the language, you will probably be overwhelmed by the speed of this initiation.\nThis book intends to document quite a bit of Java and it easily succeeds with broad coverage of Java programming in Part I and API… Read more

Description:
O'Reilly, Oct 1996. Beta Ed. Paperback. Since the earliest days of Internet scripting, Web developers have considered "JavaScript: The Definitive Guide" an essential resource. David Flanagan's approach, which combines tutorials and examples with easy-to-use syntax guides and object references, suits the typical programmer's requirements nicely. The brand-new fourth edition of Flanagan's "Rhino Book" includes coverage of JavaScript 1.5, JScript 5.5, ECMAScript 3 and the Document Object Model (DOM) Level 2 standard from the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). Interestingly, the author has shifted away from specifying--as he did in earlier editions--what browsers support each bit of the language. Rather than say Netscape 3.0 supports the Image object while Internet Explorer 3.0 does not, he specifies that JavaScript 1.1 and JScript 3.0 support Image. More usefully, he specifies the contents of independent standards such as ECMAScript, which encourages scripters to write applications for these standards and… Read more

Description:
Routledge, Nov 2000. 1. Hardcover. This book is something of a pied piper that will entice the novice reader into unfamiliar territory. It is primarily intended as an introduction to Sartre's writings, providing a bite size introduction to the wide-ranging output of Existentialism's chief protagonist. My only concern is that Priest oscillates between analysis and explanation, where this occurs the author's style of writing becomes over ambitious: attempting to analyse the specific philosophical problems posed by Sartre's writings is beyond the grasp of such a short anthology. Ultimately, there is the possibility that the language employed will deter some readers from pursuing Sartre's own writings on the same basis, when in fact this is clearly not the case. It must be acknowledged that reading this anthology cannot substitute reading Sartre's original texts, which are themselves highly accessible.\nConsidering that the book is intended to provide the reader with the tools to approach Sartre's… Read more
