Two issues, printed both sides, illustrated promotional material for the Claremont development, including land plats, and a broadside, 9 x 6 3/8 inches. "The town of Claremont was incorporated in 1886. J. Frank Mancha, a Maryland real estate developer, created the town and promoted the sale of land in the town and the Claremont Colony surrounding it. Willie Allen had inherited the Claremont estate, consisting of more than 12,000 acres, after the Civil War. He moved to New York and left it to be subdivided and sold by others. Frank Mancha took on the Claremont development project in 1879. After his death in 1890, others continued to promote land sales in the Claremont area. NP [North Carolina], 1859. Partly printed document, completed in manuscript. 20 x 32 cm. Waybill, on blue paper, for J.M. Bland & Co.'s Line, United States Mail. Old fold lines, old soiling and spotting. Recto shows the company's record of a trip on Feb. 16, 1859, with columns for the passengers names, number of seats, baggage, departure point and destination, fare, etc. Verso prints the company name, with columns for recording arrivals and departures. One passenger, a James Fairington [sp?] boarded at Salem, headed for Red[d]ies River; M.L. Williams placed a package on board at Yadkinville to be delivered to Panther Creek. A list of post offices in North Carolina, printed by the Government Printing Office in 1852-53 includes locations at Jefferson (Ashe County), Panther Creek (Surry County), and Reddies River (Wilkes County). Printed broadside, 8 1/8 x 4 1/2 inches, employing several styles and sizes of type, completed in manuscript for a purchase of puffs and Curls ($16 total) and signed "Rcd. Payment / J.P. Mounier & Lallou." Notice is given that wigs can be provided for $10 and that the firm sells, Curls, Puffs, Scalps, Braids, Frisetts, &c., at the lowest price, wholesale and retail." The business is listed in the Philadelphia directory (1835-1836), p. 101 and was still at the same address, with a different principal. We were unable to find material related to this firm on OCLC. Inscribed on a blank endpaper by the author in 1883. The essay on Cooper is quite scarce; OCLC locates but three copies (Chicago Historical Society, Harvard, Maryland-Baltimore County). Jamestown, (NY), 1863. Broadside newspaper extra, 20.5 x 12 cm. Report of Casualties in the New York 3rd Excelsior at Gettysburg. Top edge unevenly trimmed. Slight soiling in bottom margin. A listing by name of the wounded and dead (only one) from Company B of the 3rd Excelsior from Gettysburg, the great battle of the war. The famous New York Excelsior had the fifth highest number of killed and mortally wounded in the entire war. Nine injuries are described to local men, who are named, wounded on the 2nd of July. "The Brigade went into the fight with 1,700 and lost 1,100." Not found in NUS or OCLC.
