Taking a cue from Dante's Purgatorio, Jazz is considered by many to be Morrison's most difficult novel and, according to the author, embodies 'the modernity that jazz anticipated and directed, and . . . its unreasonable optimism.' Its iconic first line—'Sth, I know that woman.'—came almost unconsciously from a long-fought battle to find the voice of the book's narrator, as Morrison registered her own frustration in what Morgan Parker calls 'a self-disgusted tooth-suck and petty pencil toss.' Morrison herself recreates that tooth-suck on the audiocassette, which features packaging adapted from R. D. Scudellari's first edition design by Robert Anthony.

Lahr co-produced Prick Up Your Ears, a movie adaptation of his 1978 book recounting Orton's antic-filled but profoundly doomed relationship with Kenneth Halliwell (Wallace Shawn plays Lahr in the film). After the couple's murder-suicide, Orton and Halliwell, whose vandalized library book covers are held at London's Islington Museum, were both cremated and their ashes mixed and scattered in an unmarked corner of the gardens at Golders Green Mausoleum. 354 pp.

And if so, is he an invented protagonist or Defoe's uncle, Henry Foe? Ever since it was first published in 1722, A Journal of the Plague Year has been varyingly labeled and read as history, fiction, and historical fiction. Set in 1665 as the bubonic plague swept through London, the book was written by Defoe, possibly under pay of the British government, as a warning that history could soon repeat itself. 240 pp.

Founded in 1923, the Dial Press shared both moniker and address with The Dial magazine (which followed the long arc of American literary fashion from Transcendentalism to modernism), and went on to publish both Baldwin's The Fire Next Time and this one, his sixth and final novel.
