Description:
In original shrink-wrap. Taking a cue from Dante's Purgatorio, Jazz is considered by many to be Morrison's most difficult novel and, according to the author, embodies 'the modernity that jazz anticipated and directed, and . . . its unreasonable optimism.' Its iconic first line—'Sth, I know that woman.'—came almost unconsciously from a long-fought battle to find the voice of the book's narrator, as Morrison registered her own frustration in what Morgan Parker calls 'a self-disgusted tooth-suck and petty pencil toss.' Morrison herself recreates that tooth-suck on the audiocassette, which features packaging adapted from R. D. Scudellari's first edition design by Robert Anthony.

Description:
Tight, square spine. Clean, unmarked interior. A bumped corner, but very little wear to the book overall. Jacket has some edge-wear and areas of light rubbing. Jacket design by Kenneth R. Deardoff. Photos by George Connolly. Includes an intro by theater critic John Lahr, who was the the son of a Ziegfeld girl and Cowardly Lion actor Bert Lahr (In addition to extensive biographizing of Tennessee Williams, the critic penned a New Yorker article about his mother, Millie Schroeder, and a book about his father). Lahr co-produced Prick Up Your Ears, a movie adaptation of his 1978 book recounting Orton's antic-filled but profoundly doomed relationship with Kenneth Halliwell (Wallace Shawn plays Lahr in the film). After the couple's murder-suicide, Orton and Halliwell, whose vandalized library book covers are held at London's Islington Museum, were both cremated and their ashes mixed and scattered in an unmarked corner of the gardens at Golders Green Mausoleum. 354 pp.

Description:
Tight, square, uncreased spine. Clean, unmarked interior. Some very minor edge-wear and a crease affecting the back cover and last 5 pages, but very little wear otherwise. Edited and designed by Ian Cameron. Ford, who was known for his big-sky cinematography and dearth of close-ups, had two contrasting landscape photos hanging in his office and reportedly told a young Steven Speilberg, 'When you know why the horizon goes at the top of the frame or the bottom of the frame, then you're a director,' before throwing him out of his office. Despite his gruff reputation (When Jean-Luc Godard asked him what brought him to Hollywood, he replied, 'A train'), his lengthy interviews with Bogdanovich compiled here go much more smoothly, and the New Hollywood director also pens two essays about Ford, included along with a descriptive filmography. Lovely square format with low-horizon Monument Valley cover and generous illustrations typical of the Movie Paperbacks series by… Read More

Description:
Tight, square, uncreased spine. Clean, unmarked interior. Some light edge-wear, chipping, and small areas of creasing to covers. Foreword by J. H. Plumb. Is that the mysterious H. F. on the cover? And if so, is he an invented protagonist or Defoe's uncle, Henry Foe? Ever since it was first published in 1722, A Journal of the Plague Year has been varyingly labeled and read as history, fiction, and historical fiction. Set in 1665 as the bubonic plague swept through London, the book was written by Defoe, possibly under pay of the British government, as a warning that history could soon repeat itself. 240 pp.

Description:
Tight, square spine. Clean, unmarked interior. Gilt to spine and front board remains bright. There is some moderate edge-wear to the boards, as well as some very subtle cosmetic buckling to exterior of the spine. Light shelf-wear to the Mylar-protected jacket. Jacket design by Jack Ribik. Author photo by Max Petrus. Founded in 1923, the Dial Press shared both moniker and address with The Dial magazine (which followed the long arc of American literary fashion from Transcendentalism to modernism), and went on to publish both Baldwin's The Fire Next Time and this one, his sixth and final novel. Written in his house in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, France, the book is structured circularly around 'Emperor of Soul' Arthur Montana's death and was released to mixed reviews, which ring progressively less true over the years, as time has only shown that Baldwin is at his peak here. 'Memory does not require that we reconstitute the event, but that we justify it,' he writes as he further refines the acutely emotional… Read More
