Albert Bigelow Paine (1861-1937) is best known for his biography of Mark Twain, but also wrote biographies, several travel books, and novels. He lived in France for several years and was awarded the Legion of Honour for his historical novels on Joan of Arc. "Jan the Romantic" is also set in France, but in the early 20th century, ending after WWI.
