Description:
Leonard & Virginia Woolf at the Hogarth Press, Richmond., 1922. First edition: one of about forty ''A Subscriber'' copies with the printed and autograph slip to this effect tipped onto the front free endpaper. Octavo. 290 pages. 14-page publishers' catalogue at rear. Mustard cloth with title label to spine. The label in this copy is inscribed by Virginia Woolf to Mrs Arnold-Forster who is better known to literary history under her maiden name Ka Cox (Katherine Laird Cox). She had been one of the more important of Rupert Brooke's lovers, with their break-up in 1912 creating such emotional turmoil in him that he fled abroad. The rift occurred early that year at Lulworth where a group of Cambridge Fabians had gathered for a reading weekend. Cox confessed her growing attraction to the painter Henry Lamb and plunged Brooke into a confusion of sexual jealousy mingled with the conviction that it was the manipulations of Lytton Strachey that had brought about this disaster. Description:
T. Hasegawa, Tokyo., [c 1931]. Edition unknown, as Hasegawa issued these sets of five volumes repeatedly over a ten-year period from 1931. It seems that sets in uniform size with all volumes measuring 13.8 x 19.3 cm, as here, are earlier in the series, as later sets which include smaller volumes are also known. Some very similar sets were issued by the Macrae-Smith Company in Philadelphia and the only indication of these is on the title-label on the slipcase. In the present case Macrae-Smith are not mentioned which again suggests this is an early set. Each title was also available separately, with some of them dating back to the late 19th century. Colour woodblock illustrations on every page, printed on creped paper and bound in Japanese style with stab silk ties. All volumes fine in original fragile rice paper sleeves. The front and back boards of the original slipcase, together with the ivory clasps, are present.
