Description:
Boston: Damrell & Moore, 1856. 16pp, stitched, light toning and wear, else Very Good. A perceptive review of the South's predicament: the North's growing strength is producing a Free-State majority in the House of Representatives. The South's only hope is to maintain equality in the Senate by creating more slave states; and the only way to accomplish that is to place the issue of slavery in the territories "beyond the power of Congress." With the South's strength waning in every respect relative to the North's, "is it not infatuated folly in the South to alienate the feelings and rouse the indignation of its powerful neighbor, by Kanzas invasions, and burnings, and slaughter; by tampering with weak Presidents..; by Brooks assaults in the Senate House; by threats and insults and violence; by avowed violations of law, and the rights secured by law?" Description:
Peoria, Illinois, 1849. 16pp. Stitched, illustrated title page. Toned uniformly, closed tear at upper corner of last leaf [no loss, partial archival tape repair]. Good+. A rare Peoria imprint. "Look well and be sure you are not deceived!" The pamphlet is filled with information on the Arabian Liniment, and replete with enthusiastic testimonials. Hiram G. Farrell began his career in 1836 as a clerk in his brother's Peoria drugstore; he was fourteen years old. The two would have a falling-out: each advertised the Arabian Liniment, and claimed the other's was inferior. H.G. retired in 1903 at the age of 80, "a shrewd and industrious druggist" who "made a fortune from Farrell's Arabian Liniment" [Bogard, 'Peoria's Pioneer Druggists, the Farrells, and Farrell's Arabian Liniment', in 24 Pharmacy in History 99-105 (1982)]. Not in Byrd or McMurtrie [Peoria imprints]. Not located on OCLC.

Description:
[Peoria?, 1846. 3, [1 blank] pp. Folded, lightly worn, Very Good. This is the scarce record of Knox College's first graduation. Byrd suggested a Galesburg imprint for this item. But Tanner writes, "No press is known to have been active in Galesburg in 1846. It is more likely that this item was printed in Peoria by Samuel H. Davis, who printed another item for Knox College at about the same time." Knox College was chartered in 1837 by the Illinois legislature, which numbered Abraham Lincoln among its members. Knox's website states, "Our founders opposed slavery in all forms—physical, spiritual, intellectual—and believed deeply in the potential of every human being to learn, grow, and contribute to the greater good of the community. This was a radical idea at the time. . . The fifth Lincoln-Douglas debate was held on campus in 1858. Lincoln used the occasion to denounce slavery on moral terms for the first time. This was not a coincidence." Each graduate delivered an Oration. Themes varied:… Read More

Chicago: Press & Tribune Book & Job Printing Office, 1860. Original printed wrappers [some dustsoil]. Stitched, 131pp. Minor wear to blank lower edges of several leaves. Near Fine. Interdenominational strife between Presbyterians and Congregationalists brought forth this pamphlet. The Board of Trustees of Knox College, founded by Presbyterians, protests "the fallacies, and misrepresentations of the pamphlet above named," a report adopted by the Congregational General Association of Illinois. Bailey, commissioned by the Trustees, issues this scarce rebuttal "with the earnest desire that it may prove instrumental in correcting the many errors which have of late been widely circulated concerning the College." He recounts the College's founding by Presbyterian churches and ministers, emphasizing the Herculean labors of Presbyterian minister George Gale. "Of the thirty-four Subscribers who founded Knox College, thirty-three were Presbyterians, and one only was a Congregationalist." The Congregational… Read More

Philadelphia: Gedruckt bey Carl Cist, in der Zweyten-strasse, 1784. [10], 140pp. Original calf with raised spine bands. Light scattered foxing. Very Good. Christoph Schulz [a/k/a Christopher Schultz] [1718-1789] was born in Silesia, Germany; his parents were well-to-do farmers and followers of the Schwenkfelder religion based on the teachings of the German Protestant Reformer Caspar Schwenckfeld von Ossig [1489-1561]. The Schwenkfelders were severely persecuted in Silesia by the Catholics, and many of them fled to the United States. Schulz's family were with a group who fled to Pennsylvania in the 1730s. Schulz was a devout follower of the Schwenkfelder religion and one of the leaders in promoting its religious body in Pennsylvania. He was chosen to prepare this catechism at a general conference held in 1762; the first printing was issued in 1763 under title: Catechismus, oder Anfänglicher Unterricht Christlicher Glaubens-Lehre.
