Original brown leather binding with lavish gold illustrated cover and spine, designs and details. 36 superb engravings by Wilhelm Von Kaulbach. 257pp. Slight wear to edges and corners, occasional foxing and light discoloration otherwise a very good copy of a book seldom seen in presentable condition. A high-water mark in mid-19th century children's illustration and engraving.

Publisher's beige cloth (with interesting and repeating cross-hatch stitch design), attractive cover illustration of a mirror-image of elf in stylized garden, green lettering on spine. Illustrated with title page woodcut design and repeating headpieces to all pages by Louise Keeler, the wife of the author. Some wear to covers, very good.

One page letter by Charles S. Keene, 1823-1891, prolific English artist and illustrator, said to be one of the foremost English illustrators in black and white. "239 King's Road, Chelsea, Dear Boutcher, I was sorry I could not show up on Sunday but I had several engagements... I've been so chivied with work this week that it slipped my memory- pray then excuse me for this, Yours ever, Charles S. Keene."

Near fine copy.

Gorgeous binding by Bumpus in full blue morocco with dozens of elaborate green, dark brown, ochre and red leather onlays forming an elegant and wide blossom and vine pattern surrounding the outer half-inch perimeter of the front cover and coming together in the center with additional onlaid designs via a braid motif. Spine similarly detailed. Wide dentelles with bold gilt parallel ruling (five lines each). AEG. Signed in gilt pallet at rear, "Bumpus Ltds, Oxford." One very small nick to petal onlay on cover, a fine example of Bumpus craftmanship.

Uncommon in this deluxe binding.

King offering. Some edge wear, corners chipped. Very good internally.

Stated March, 1912 on copyright page (there is a holograph entry on front fly, simply "1914." Other in pictorial wrappers. Books are fine in near fine wrappers.

The scarce first edition Kingsley's children's book on Greek mythology. With eight full-page illustrations by Kingsley. A prize book with 1856 inscription on front fly: "Helleston Grammar School. This prize was adjudged to Richard John Grey, by me, F. H Sivener, M.A., September 24, 1856." With the stamp, lower free fly: "Bound by Nutt, Cambridge." A handsome copy of a scarce Kingsley first edition.

Three-quarter calf, marbled boards with gilt vignette on cover, re-backed. 350pp. The scarce 1st edition, 1st issue, with L'Envoi poem at leaf B (following erratum page), which was suppressed by Kingsley during the printing of the first edition. Superb and celebrated frontispiece by J. Noel Paton, others in the text. Front cover detached, wear; [together with] a splendid copy of the first edition copy (without the suppressed plate) in full green publisher's cloth, with the main fault being fraying and peeling at base of spine affecting small corner of cover (in need of repair), corners worn, slight loss of gilt to ruling on perimeter. Advertisement leaf at front, clean and bright internally. First editions of Water-Babies in the original cloth are extremely scarce, and so is the first issue without "L'Envoi" poem.
