Pamphlet format, side stapled at the center, glued into plain wrappers with program information printed to upper wrapper. Underlining and marginal notes in red pencil. Description:
1879. [KABUKI] OKANO Seki, editor. KABUKI SHIMPO^ Long run of the Magazine. Published from 1879 until its demise in 1897, the KABUKI NEWS was the primary organ of traditional Kabuki theatre in Japan. At various stages published by the so-called Kabuki Shimpo^ Publishing Company and later by Kitahara Suehara (Genrokukan) in To^kyo^, nearly 1700 numbers of the journal were produced, with news of performances, b+w woodcut illustrations and in some later issues full-color woodblock covers or frontispieces designed by the ukiyo-e masters of the day. A remarkable resource for students of the history of Kabuki in the Meiji era. The issues were bound in wrappers. We have 538 issues in hand in very clean condition. Some seem to have been removed from multivolume bindings but are complete. So, almost one third of the total published. A useful and important find.

Description:
1961. [MIMEOGRAPH/STENCIL ART] Wakayama Yasoji, poet and artist. KAENAI KIMONO. Tokyo, Seienso. Showa 36 [1961]. One of 200 copies, signed by Wakayama. Small western-bound full leather volume of poems, illustrated by Wakayama in his own technique of stencil art, named kohan. 10.5 x 9 cm. There is an inset kohan illustration on the front board and there are 15 pages of illustrations, each facing a kohan printed poem by Wakayama. The fine art printmaking technique of kohan was developed in 1941 by Wakayama [1903-83], a close associate of Onchi Koshiro. He was an enormously prolific single sheet printmaker using color woodblock and kohan, but this charming little volume is one of his scarce and wonderful artist' books. It is in excellent condition throughout, in the original decorative box and the outer publisher's shipping box, as well.

1930. [PREWAR ADVERTISING] YAMANA Ayao. KAFEE BAA KISSATEN KOKOKU ZUANSHU. Tokyo, Seibundo, Showa 5 [1930]. 11 13/16" X 8 3/4". Printed paper wrappers. 48 pp. of b+w and color plates, and 4 pp. of preliminaries and finals, depicting designs by the important 20th Century Japanese designer, Yamana Ayao (1897-1980), the originator of the "Shiseido-style" during his long tenure as the cosmetic company's head designer. This particular portfolio is a compilation of his designs for the coffee shop/bar trade - introducing a modified Deco aesthetic which was the height of chic in the inter War years all over the world, but particularly in the lost city of Tokyo. Remarkable, ephemeral, rare.

Description:
1809. [EHON] Kawamura KIHÔ, artist. KAFUKU NIMPITSU. Osaka & Kyoto, Bunka 6 [1809]. 17.9 x 26.0 cm. 25 double page lightly colored illustrations. For all intents and purposes identical to the copy at Mitchell 322-3, save that the covers are darker brown with a blindstamping of geometric patterns and chrysanthemum mon. The afterword is dated winter 1808 and the colophon spring 1809, so a very early copy indeed. Very clean with the printed paper title slip. String-bound Japanese-style, fukuro toji. Internally a very good printing in good or better condition. An uncommon title by this important artist. See Hillier's compendium for more on this work which he and many others have enjoyed through the years. A cornerstone of Shijô art illustration in book form.

Description:
1936. [JAPANESE POSTER] Osaka Mainichi Shimbunsha. KAGAYAKU NIPPON DAIHAKURANKAI [THE GREAT EXHIBITION OF BRILLIANT JAPAN] & KAGAYAKU NIPPONHAKU Annaiki. The poster was printed by Osaka Seihan printing company in their patented high-quality "HB" process, which they used to reproduce the effect of color woodblock, etc. With an (unread) artist's seal. Dated on the recto April/May 1936 this large poster (60.8 X 107 cm.) displays bold colors and near abstract design which shows the progress of Japanese industry as a freighter ship evolves pictorially in ascent through a great gear wheel, to an airplane, and then a skyscraper with pennants, all mediated by repeated circular images of a golden sun and red sun akadama images from the national flag. Considering its size, the fragility of the paper and its age, the edgewear and creasing, along with a bit of foxing, leaves this piece still unusually clean and bright with older backing and color restoration. Presents very well. Perhaps the most interesting and… Read More

Description:
18. [EHON MANUSCRIPT] SHIJO^ SCHOOL ALBUM. Fukuro-toji style string-bound album, 26.5 x 19.3 cm, consisting of 14 double page and 12 single page color images painted in a skillful Shijo^ manner, apparently a product of the mid-19th century. The majority of the images are of figures, with a significant minority of bird and flower studies. This work is very problematical: the cover once had a paper label, it is gone, but in its place, someone has brushed in faintly "Kakinuma Kohei Kaicho^" [The Pictorial Notebook of Kakinuma Kohei]. We have been unable to unearth any reference to a Kakinuma Kohei. In addition there are various kanbun-style poetical utterances on the backcover. However, it would seem that the covers have been added later, as the first and last paintings are both worn and soiled, as if they had been the outside covers themselves for a long time. Thus the inscriptions and the cover title are probably not contemporary with the work itself and may be of doubtful accuracy. In any case, the… Read More

1835. [EHON] SHIOJI YOSHIAKI [YABU KAKUDÔ] artist. KAKUDÔ GAFU. A lovely printing of this wonderful album of color woodblock images in the Maruyama-Shijô idiom. 25.7 x 18.6 cm. This is the 1835 edition (Tempô 6), as at Mitchell 330, but with only 7 of the original 25 double fold prints in delicate color woodblock. In the original covers, orihon folding album, in a clasped chitsu case. Very unusual. Possibly a [binder?]'s abridged copy made up of sheets at hand or a restorer's rescue of undamaged prints. In any event, a fragment and priced accordingly.

1964. JAPANESE PAPERMAKING] GOTO Seikichiro 後藤清吉郎. KAMI NO TABI. 紙の旅 Tokyo, Bijutsu Shuppansha. Shôwa 39 [1964]. Large oblong folio in washi covers, 33.5 x 44.3 cm. #181 of 300cc. Illustrated beautifully in katazome throughout. The illustrations as well as the text are by Gôtô, a fine artist as well as one of the most eminent scholars of Japanese papermaking. Besides the textual illustrations there are a large number of full page color prints which are lovely indeed. Paper samples are tipped in, the book is printed on handmade paper, bound in it and enclosed in it, as the clasped case is washi over boards, as well. The text, in Japanese, is scholarly, succinct and informative. All in all, a truly remarkable work. One print has some foxing, else a near fine copy.

1811. [EHON] KAWAMURA Bumpô. KANGA SHINAN NIHEN. Kyoto: Hishiya Magobei, et al., Bunka 8 [1811]. String-bound Japanese style in yellow covers with paper title labels. 26 x 17.5 cm. This "second series" of the KANGA SHINAN [Manual of Chinese-style Painting] was the only one illustrated by Bumpo and was published over thirty years after the first series; so it obviously stands on its own as an independent work. The simple designs are printed in sumi and light colors in very good impression. The condition of the three volumes is very good with only minor internal soiling and some exterior wear and soiling. A very nice example of an early printing. (Mitchell p. 335, Ryerson 385, Brown 104). Complete, as issued.
