19th Century. 16 Palm leaves (5 ¼ x 23 inches). Each lacquered in red with elaborate overall decoration in gilt, 14 leaves with lines of black/dark brown lacquer text in square script (known as 'magyi-zi) recto and verso, two leaves with text on one side only, the earliest kammavaca consisted of folios made of plain palm leaves, each of which had four lines of square-inked script on a gold or silver background." ("Kammavaca) as per these. With a pair of thick red lacquered teak boards, gilt decoration on outer surfaces. Unbound as issued. Upper teak board has minor loss to one corner, everything else in amazing condition as per original.Once the property given as a gift to Canadian diplomat in India by a Burmese friend. Description:
KNICKERBOCKER PAPERS. WASHINGTON IRVING. Published by London: Philip Lee Warner, 1914. A beautiful, numbered limited edition of Irving's most popular works, printed on handmade paper at the Riccardi Press. Number 689 of 1000. 30:xi:1922. In a quarter cloth binding with paper covered boards. Externally, very smart with slight shelf wear only. Internally, firmly bound. Bright and clean throughout. Very nice small leather book plate on front paste-down, with slight offsetting. 'Rip Van Winkle' and 'The Legend of Sleepy Hollow' are short stories by the American author Washington Irving published in 1819 and 1820 respectively. Written while Irving was living in Birmingham, England, they were part of a collection entitled 'The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon' and are among the earliest examples of American fiction still read today.
