Description:
Nalchik: Kabardinobalkarskoe GIZ, 1940. 110, [2] pp.: ill. 26x19 cm. Original illustrated cardboards. Bleak stains on the title page, remains of a label on the spine, tears and small losses of boards extremities. One of 3000 copies. First translation to Kabardino-Circassian language. The book originally published in 1936 became immensely popular right away. The illustrations by Elena Safonova (1902-1980) featured in the first Russian edition as well and became classic. As often the case with the North Caucasian languages Arabic characters were being used in Kabardino-Circassian script before 1917, then latin in 1924-1936 and after all-Union decision to transform everything to Cyrillic it was changed again. This is one of the early examples of the use of Cyrillic letters for Kabardino-Circassian language.

Very rare. This is one of the most famous masonic books of the 18th century - the ABC book for Russian Freemasons. The first Russian translation was published by Nikolai Novikov in 1783, and soon it became one of Russian rarities even though a few new editions were published later. Nikolai Novikov (1744-1818) was one of the key figures during the Enlightenment era in Russia and Moscow Freemasonry in 18th century. He published this translation in 1783 but before that Russian Masons knew it very well reading handwritten manuscripts in English and German.… Read More

Stockholm: Severnye ogni, 1921. 199 pp. 8vo. A fine clean copy. Contemporary cloth binding, original wrappers preserved. Light tanning to the wrappers, slightly rubbed on the extremities of the covers. Rare. The first Russian translation of the world-famous work was printed in Stockholm by Russian emigrant publishers. John Maynard Keynes (1883-1946) was considered to be one of the most influential economists of the 20th century. His second book, The Economic Consequences of the Peace, was published in late 1919 and became an immediate success on both sides of the Atlantic. The work established Keynes's reputation with the public as a leading economist. In six months, the book had sold 100,000 copies with translations into 12 languages. In this work he gave an eloquent and detailed analysis of the Versailles Treaty and made a convincing case that it would have far-reaching and damaging consequences. He wrote that "...if we aim at the impoverishment of central Europe, vengeance, I dare predict, will… Read More

Moscow: Knigotsentr OGIZa, 1931. 76, [4] pp.: ill. 19,5x13,5 cm. In original illustrated wrappers. The wrappers and the title pages are restored. Overall a good copy. First and only edition. One of 4050 copies. The abridged list of architects and artists, associated with the book, include Kirill Zdanevich, Naum Segal', Lavinsky brothers and Grigoriy Zamskii. Extremely rare and richly illustrated manual on how to display books both inside and outside of Soviet bookstores. The book is divided into two relevant sections. The first one started from the outer look: the edition explained how to design window display and signboards to attract passers. The author drew attention to different types of internal display furniture: store counters, shelves and racks. Among them is a book display invented by A. Abramov that was commonly used for book exhibiting and displaying. Simple in construction, it was presented in a technical drawing and photographs together with assembly instructions. Other photographs… Read More

Description:
Moscow: Moskovskii rabochii, 1927. 88 pp., 22 leaves with photographs. 35x27 cm. In original illustrated constructivist cardboards with gilt lettering, in modern custom case replicating cover design. Covers restored, case slightly rubbed, otherwise mint. First and only edition. One of 10 000 copies. Rare. Banned edition. Designs of the front and back covers present collaboration of Gustav Klutsis and Sergei Sen'kin, notable Soviet masters of photomontage. Their work proves that the constructivist experiments began to be used extensively in Soviet political art in the late 1920s. The front cover combines drawn red flags and a photograph of hands of a living man: the Revolution was carried out by individuals. The back cover immensely differs from it. An endless human stream, pouring through Lenin's mausoleum, was squeezed into a Z letter; behind people the red geometric figures contrast with the black background. The work clearly expresses the nature of Soviet ideology and what happened with the most… Read More

Description:
Leningrad: Lenizdat, 1930. 20 pp.: ill. 18,5x17 cm. In original illustrated wrappers. Tears of edges, stains occasionally, original black and white illustrations colored by hand. Very rare. Brilliant children's book about the practice of waste paper gathering and involvement of little octobrists in it. Soviet writer Ivan Belyshev (1894-1942) was a former military officer who left the service in 1927. He debuted in the early 1930s, wrote a range of popular stories and contributed to a number of periodicals for children. The edition was illustrated by artist Vladimir Konashevich (1888-1963) who could be rightfully seen as the second author. His earliest children's book was 'ABC in Pictures' (1918); he totally devoted himself to children's books in 1922. In that year, Konashevich had designed several fairy tales by C. Perrault and A. Pushkin. These editions came out in Berlin, due to the high quality of German reproducing watercolors. In the following years, colorful books with his illustrations… Read More

Description:
Ca. second half of 1940s. Drawings in ink and pencil. 20 leaves. 17,5x12,2 cm. On the front cover artist's self-portrait in a classical satirical manner, on the verso - an image of the notebook with artists's caricature character 'walking out of it'. Among other images are portraits, cartoons, political caricatures, genre compositions, et al. One page includes hand written names of participants of Kukryniksy. Kukryniksy was a creative group of three Soviet artists - Mikhail Kupriyanov (1903-1991), Porfirii Krylov (1902-1990) and Nikolai Sokolov (1903-2000) - mostly known for their caricatures. Their name derived from the combined names of artists. They met at VKhUTEMAS in the early 1920s. The three began drawing caricatures under the joint signature in 1924. In their early years of collaboration they developed a very recognizable style for which became famous and popular. In the land of strict political agenda their work became almost necessary. They became nationally famous in the 1930s after the… Read More

Leningrad: Priboi, 1925. 48 pp.: ill. 20x14 cm. In original illustrated wrappers. Very good and clean copy, covers slightly bumped, spine chipped, blank upper corners of last two leaves lost. First and only edition. One of 10 130 copies produced. This handbook on the common topic of "how to teach yourself how to swim" was published with an interesting photomontage cover design. Above two smiling female swimmers a man is shown in the process of jumping. The figure, certainly captured while jumping from a tower, was turned into a horizontal orientation and placed in the center of the composition. Around him are the two-color constructivist title, complementary rectangles to the left and a rather fragile-looking construction from which to jump into the water is on the right side. The book detailed the practical and general hygiene advantages for workers of swimming. It is well-illustrated with schematic drawings of various preparatory body exercises, muscle training and swimming training itself. The… Read More

The catalogue for the 3rd exhibition (of only 4 held by the Society) that was held in 1929 includes introduction "ORS in 1929" by A. Bakushinsky (short history of the society and its current state), a numbered list of 82 works organized by artists in alphabetical order (first real members and then a few participants not from society), a list of members with their current posts (chairman I.M. Chaikov). Among members were Vatagin, Sandomirskaya, Chaikov, Shadr and others. The Society (ORS) was founded in 1926 by former members of the Moscow Union of Artists and Sculptors. The impetus for the creation was the success of the sculptural department of the OBIS exhibition held in early 1925. The Society consisted of almost all famous Moscow sculptors, and their ranks was regularly replenished by the graduates of the sculpture faculty of Vkhutemas-Vkhutein. About 20 people… Read More

Bilingual catalogue in German and Ukrainian, title also in German. One of 2000 copies. Very good condition. Owner's inscription in pencil on the front cover. Some pencil underlinings on some pages. Publisher's cover features a simple drawing with the 1943 year underneath - signed "LB". No artist in the catalogue has such initials, thus the cover cannot be attributed. Spilka Pratsi Ukrains'kykh Obrazotvorchykh Mysttsiv u L'vovi [Labor Union of Ukrainian Visual Artists in Lviv] or SUOM was a short-lived union that witnessed how art can thrive under the most unfavourable circumstances. As many international and multicultural cities, the diverse artistic scenery of interwar Lviv enjoyed thriving life. A dozen artistic circles existed up to the 1930's. It was essentially demolished by the Soviets but some freedom re-emerged with German occupation starting in 1941.… Read More

Ivanovo-Voznesensk: Izd. "Reklamprovintsii" pri gaz. "Rabochii krai, 1925. [1-22], 25-123, [6], 135-240, [2], 241-355 = 356 (of 355 indicted) pp.: ill. 26x35 cm. In original full-cloth binding with blind lettering. No half-title. Spine and few leaves restored, endpapers renewed. Some soiling, otherwise very good. Rare provincial edition. Striking photo album containing over 450 photographs, drawings, diagrams and maps relating to a large Russian and Soviet manufacturing center in the city of Ivanovo-Voznesensk, also known at the time as Red Manchester. Among all the illustrations is a remarkable row of photomontages varying in complexity and subject-matter. It was at Ivanovo-Voznesensk (and renamed Ivanovo in 1932) that arguably the most important strike of the 1905 revolution took place. It resulted in the establishment of the first Russian city council, or Soviet of Workers Deputies, and was therefore crucial to the later establishment of the Soviet Union. In the 19th century, Ivanovo-Voznesensk… Read More

An interesting overview of the pantheon of northern Buddhism and Lamaism by the noted Soviet archeologist and ethnographer Boris Kuftin (1892-1953). The study was based on the collections exhibited in the Moscow Central Museum of Ethnology, which at the time possessed the most extensive assortment of Buddhist art objects in the Soviet Union. This edition was issued three years after the establishment of the Museum by one of the employees, Boris Efimov, who was soon accused of counter-revolutionary activities and exiled to Vologda for 3 years. In the book, the author gives a concise outline of the most important moments in the history of the northern schools of Buddhism from the point of view of the development of the pantheon and cult.
