Description:
Totem Books, Oct 1993. Paperback. This is a must have. Crumb and Kafka, who would have thought it, yet it makes perfect sense - the illustrations are some of the finest and blackest he has produced to date, and the illustrated Metamorphosis is a particular treat. Mairowitz's text is well balanced and lucid. The book is both informative and funny, bringing out the dark humour in Kafka as well as the paranoid side he is better known for. This is a fantastic introduction to Kafka, a must have for Crumb fans, and a great graphic novel in its own right.

Description:
Oxford Paperbacks, Mar 1982. Paperback. Roger Scruton writes with beautiful clarity about philosophy in general and Kant in particular. This short book lays out the main themes of Kant's thought in a prose that makes the arguments accessible and brings a focus to Kant's continued relevance to how we view the world and the human condition. I would wholeheartedly recommend this book.

Description:
Cambridge University Press, Apr 1998. Paperback. The first work I read of Kant's was Critique of Practical Reason, which was probably a mistake. Afterwards I read this and it helped me a great deal in understanding Kant's second critique and Critique of Pure Reason. The style is more sparkling then his three most well known works and requires less patience but saying that you still need to read some sentences five or six times.\nI don't agree with everything dear old Immanuel states in this work particularly as he doesn't leave enough room for faith and he considers morality in the abstract far too much. But then again you cannot agree with a thinker 100% of the time; and I don't believe anybody could have made the strides in philosophy that he did. In my opinion it is better to start off with this work before attempting his critiques', but anyway good luck to you in whatever work of Kants you read because you will need it.

Description:
Cambridge University Press, May 1997. New edition. Paperback. Prolegomena is basically Kant's simplified version of his "Critique of Pure Reason". It's not an easy read, but you don't need a degree in philosophy to understand it and it is essential reading for anyone interested in space and time, or in the question of what we can know and how we can know it.\nThe really great thing about Prolegomena, as with Critique of Pure Reason, is that it is highly logical; there are no "smoke and mirrors" or unsubstantiated opinions here. You can read it side by side with any book on modern theoretical physics to the advantage of both approaches; equally, anyone who is inclined to a religious disposition but also likes to be highly logical will find this book very interesting reading. Kant takes questions like "do we have free will" and "is there a God?" and essentially solves them once and for all, at least to his own satisfaction - but you might not like the answers.

Description:
Harper, Oct 2002. New edition. Paperback. This book has everything: It's funny, exciting, well written and I just love the heroine Kate Brannigan. I can't think of a better female role model! In this book Brannigan keeps quite busy. She takes on an absurdly mysterious case, where whole conservatories have gone missing. At the same time she has to help her best friend Alexis and her girlfriend, who want to build a new house. They buy a piece of land, only to realise that the same plot has been sold to someone else as well.\nMcDermid's style is absolutely brilliant and this is one of her best books, almost as good as Blue Genes. Brannigan is an even more convincing, interesting and incredibly funny person than Kinsey Milhone or any other female detective. This book is impossible to stop reading. I loved it so much I have actually reread it several times, something I seldom do with crime novels. Read it!

Description:
O'Brien Press Ltd, Nov 2004. Paperback. Prof. Bacik gives a very interesting look at Irish society. Taking a secular stance Bacik explores many issues in Irish society, she offers some suggested solutions to these problems focusing on allowing individuals the right to self-determination and to live their lives without the Church being imposed on them.\nAlthough the book looks at a vast array of topical issues many seem to relate back to the Church-State relations.\nThis book makes a very interesting read.

Description:
Oxford Paperbacks, Nov 1988. 9th Impression. Paperback. Soren Kierkegaard's philosophy was largely neglected during his lifetime (1813 -1855) partly because he wrote in Danish and partly because his ideas, which were spread across a variety of disciplines, did not find a philosophical home until the theory of existentialism became fashionable in the 1920's and 1930's. \r\n\r\nConvinced his thinking would be universally accepted in the long term, Kierkegaard was highly critical of the society in which he lived, in particular of the role of the Lutheran Church and attempted to revitalise the Christian faith as he understood it. Later commentators have interpreted him, with varying degrees of accuracy and success, as individualist, post modernist and neo-othodoxist.\r\n\r\nHis "strange and complex disposition" was influenced by his father's dominant personality which demanded of his children "absolute obedience" in an atmosphere of "gloom and religious guilt", arising from his father's morbid belief the… Read more

Description:
Penguin, Jul 2006. New Ed. Paperback. A collection of Chandler's short stories, many of which were expanded, or sometimes combined into his longer novels. Philip Marlowe didn't make an appearance by name in these early stories, but his character and actions are already developed. No Crime in the Mountains is the final story and doesn't appear in the later books, possibly because the Nazi villains were no longer fashionable. This is a fascinating read for Chandler fans interested in the origins of his ideas, but casual readers should just stick to the excellent and more developed novels.

Description:
Granta Books, Jun 1998. New edition. Paperback. Collins was born in 1954 and joined the IRA in late 70s. Not a dry history but a very exciting book from the inside. It contains a number of nicknames of leading IRA men scap, hardbap, mooch, hawk etc in the area who have since been named in other books and publications. Collins became part of an intelligence unit as well as an internal security unit in his native newry area. He was arrested in 1985 and became an informer however he quickly changed his mind but stayed on remand in prison for 2 years. The IRA exiled him as he didn't testify against them. He lived in Southern Ireland for 3 years, returning to Belfast for 2 years to work quietley in a college, then to Edinburgh,Scotland as a community worker. Finally in 1994 he returned to his home area thinking he was safe. He made a tv programme in 95 talking about his life which was critical of the IRA then in 97 this book was published,a devastating critique of the provos. After regularly receiving death… Read more

Description:
HarperCollins Publishers Ltd, Feb 2006. New edition. Paperback. This was my first Val McDiarmid and perhaps reading the reviews it wasn't the best place to start (see the reviews under the pink/purple cover edition here on Amazon): this starts out well but starts to deteriorate and towards the end gets increasingly silly with a completely unbelievable denoument.\r\n\r\nThe plot is multi-layered with three separate murder investigations going on, but that's probably one too many and the since the initial strand of the Spanish plot ends up by going nowhere it could easily have been cut.\r\n\r\nThe characters were interesting with enough roundness to fill out the book but without them taking over. But I'm afraid that after 500 pages of build up the ultimate conclusion with the identity of the serial killer was barely credible and had me giggling on the tube! It passes a commute but I couldn't help feeling that VM was writing with her tongue very firmly in her cheek.
