Vladimír Jan Hnizdo (1914-1978) was a painter, graphic artist and theater set designer. This is an early work, before he studied at the School of Applied Arts in Prague, and displays sophistication. After heading the production at the Theater of Cologne he was professor at SUPŠ in Prague. This student almanac is a bibliophile production, likely financed by local businesses. Istorii Material'noi Kultury, 1922 Octavo 21x16 cm., wrappers, 80(4)pp. Memorial exhibition of the work of Georgii Ivanovich Narbut (Heorhiy Narbut) (1886-1920), renowned as the most important Ukrainian graphic designer of the 20th century. He designed banknotes, postage stamps, illustrated books and magazines, and is famous for his silhouette drawings of notables figures. OCLC locates this work in 14 North American institutions.

Octavo 16.5x10cm., original wrappers, 64pp. First and only edition. Cover design and twelve drawings by Lajos Gulácsy. Arthur Keleti (Artur Rosenburg, 1889-1969) was a Hungarian poet and translator; he was also a master bookmaker. In 1912 he met Lajos Gulácsy who encouraged him to publish his first book of poetry after which they went to Italy. This trip had a major impact for both of them in their work. Keleti went on to release poetry, plays and operas, and his books are often collaborative with artists in bibliophile editions. Gulácsy (1882-1932) was a unique Pre-Raphaelite and Symbolist visionary and an important part of Hungarian Secessionism whose late works point to surrealism. He had a nervous breakdown in the First World War which led to mental illness and was confined to institutions after 1919. Uncommon, with copies of this work rarely on the market. (The Baptism of St. Vladimir, a Legend of Russian History) A commemorative volume, celebrating the centenary of Karel Havlícek Borovský (1821-1856), writer, journalist, critic , politician and publisher who headed the newspaper Národní Noviny, espousing liberal nationalist causes; He was arrested for his publishing efforts in 1851 and sent into exile in Brixen (now Italy) where he composed his most important works, including this long, ribald satirical poem. Borovský is revered as the leader of the Czech Renaissance of politics and culture. These late poems are a rallying point of Czech national identity and were published in his centenary year in several editions. The book is accompanied with ten drawings by Richard Lander, a member of the Linie group in Ceské Budejovice, who renders this in a modernist fashion and emphasizes the erotic aspects of the text. Prague: Pokrok, 1932 Octavo 19x12.5 cm., wrappers, 210(2)pp. Ergon Erwin Kisch (1885-1948) was a colorful reporter who is known as the founder of „investigative journalism,“ but historians view his work as art literature than an objective description of real events. Based in Berlin, he wrote in German for Prague newspapers and was given diplomatic status which protected him as a Jew and communist. Moscow: Mospoligraf, 1924 Oblong quarto 15x23 cm., wrappers, 6(2)pp. 25000 copies. A prospectus for the Russian showing of the 1924 German film Das Wachfigurenkabinett starring Emil Jannings with Konrad Feidt, Werner Krauss and Olga Belyaeva and directed by Paul Leni and Leo Birinsky. The film was adapted from the eponymous original story by Gustav Meyrinck. Constructivist photomontage cover and decorations. Glavlit 68622; OCLC finds one holding worldwide, at Yale. This copy has slight chipping on front cover.

Riga: the author, 1940 Octavo, wrapper, 32pp. Essays: Why I am an Atheist, tracing history and reason to support author's position. Zeidmanis (1871-1977) was active as a writer of philosophical and psychological books. No library copies found in worldcat. Cover soiled.

Quarto 30.5x23 cm. wrappers, (14) pp. Lidia Budogoskaia (1898-1984) led a difficult but principled life and dedicated most of her writing to children's literature. She is most famous for The Story of the Red-Haired Girl, an autobiographical account of her early life. which has been translated into many languages. The present work, "How Sanka Was Brought to the Hearth," engaged Aleksei Pakhomov as the illustrator. Pokhomov (1900-1973), studied and worked under Lebedev, where he acquired mastery of the lithographic art. When designing the book, Pakhomov used his impressions both from annual trips to his homeland, to the village of Varlamovo, Vologda region, and from visits to the "Sower" commune in the North Caucasus in 1930 and the "Beautiful Mecha" commune in the Oryol region. This story with Pakhomov's illustrations was first published in two issues of the Chizh magazine, to which Budogoskaia was a regular contributor. Moscow-Leningrad: Kinopechat', 1927 Octavo 17x13cm., wrappers, 64pp. Cover design by the Stenberg Brothers. Founded in 1914 by Aleksandr Tairov. It provided an intimate environment which drew the audience and actors together. In the early Soviet era it presented major experimental drama and was buttressed by the artistic director Aleksandra Ekster for set and costume design, and further collaboration of Konstantin Medunetskii for decor. Initially it steered clear of any political orientation, but in 1928 Tairov produced Bulgakov's Purple Island which drew the authorities' attention. Stalin himself mocked its presence as a bourgeois theater and thenceforth it operated under close scrutiny, persisting into WWII. This book is the first appraisal of its place in Russian art and culture, with photos of its various activities to date of various major productions before it encountered government resistance. From 1925 to 1932 she published a series of children s book. The illustrator Vladimir Mikhailovich Konashevich (1888-1963) was a graphic artist, art historian well-known to Russian readers for his classic illustrations of children s books, including Samuil Marshak and Kornei Chukovskii. No institutional holdings of this book found in worldcat. Very good++, near fine.

Riga: Vainags, 1920 Octavo, wrappers, 127pp., undated but 1920. Linards Laicens (1883-1938) was one of the leading intellectual forces of the Latvian avant-garde. A leftist, frankly often a propagandist, he was a poet, novelist and essayist who had a strong sense of visual design. He edited a number of journals journals of major importance (Kreisa fronte, Tribine) and contributed to many more. Due to political ostracism he emigrated to the USSR in 1935 and was executed in 1938 during the Great Purge which singled out Latvian emigres. This work is the first collection of his poems in the new republic of Latvia. Laicens enlisted Niklavs Strunke for book design, cover and five linocuts, all in Strunke’s most visually experimental style incorporating futurist and cubist elements. Niklavs Strunke (1894-1966) was one of the leading artists of the Riga avant-garde artists group; a gifted graphic designer, he worked in both conventional and cutting-edge genres. Prague: Panorama, 1981 Quarto 29.5 x 20.5 cm, wrapper folio, 36pp. and 18 bromograph photos and contact sheet. The last of the series of Profiles of the Works of Master Photographers of Czechoslovakia. Plicka (1894-1987) was a renowned photographer of the Czechoslovakia, with numerous photobooks to his credit. The text is written by his friend Ludvik Baran, a specialist in Czech ethnographic culture and close to Plicka in his interest to plumb the treasures of their native country. Uncommon, with no library holdings in North America.

Prague: Odeon, 1926 Octavo, wrappers, 104pp. Cover design by "A. Don" (generally acknowledged to be a pseudonym for Jindrich Styrsky), with the title page design by Karel Teige and Otakar Mrkvicka. One of the delights of the Devetsil era, Karneval, a novelette, was Nezval's first substantial prose effort. The black and white photomontage with the red lettering on the cover is conceived as the carnival of life. The title page follows with the same combination of black, white and red as the cover in a slightly whimsical manner. This was a collaborative production by the founding members of Devetsil.

Budapest: József Nádass, 1947 Quarto wrappers, 54pp. A small Festschrift for Kassák's 70th birthday, celebrated during the brief postwar period of recovery under relatively free auspices before Communist takeover in 1948. With that, as the open exchange of ideas and westward orientation in the arts, politics and culture were suppressed, Kassák entered into public silence. The present work celebrates Kassák's many activities as a major representative of the avant-garde for over 50 years as editor, publisher, painter & graphic designer, novelist and poet. Half the book are encomia by his contemporaries including an original composition by Pál Kadosa, followed by selections of his poetry, artwork, novels. Published privately by his close associate Nádass. Richly illustrated. Uncommon, with only one copy in North American libraries.

Moscow-Leningrad: Kinopechat', 1927 Duodecimo 13x8.5 cm, wrappers, 7pp. A French historical drama filmed in 1924 Miracle de loups, based on Henri Dupuis-Mazuel's novel of the same title. It was directed by Raymond Bernard with Jean Emile Vanni-Marcoux in the lead role. Undated publication, but an exemplary poster was designed by the Stenberg brothers in 1927 and the Russian release is assumed to be the same date. The film acquired high plaudits internationally and was considered a French equal to DW Griffith s Birth of a Nation. This little rarity has strong constructivist graphics. Octavo 21.4x14 cm., original wrappers, 104 pp. 3000 copies. Full-cover design by El Lissitzky. Mayakovsky wrote this poem as his contribution to the tenth anniversary of the Revolution. It is a long poem, epical and didactic, aimed at mass readership to learn of the forces that brought the Revolution about and a heroic depiction of the triumph of the proletariat.
