Description:
1, 6, 11, 47 folding leaves. Large 8vo, orig. yellow patterned wrappers (wrappers a little soiled), orig. block-printed title label on upper cover, new stitching. [Korea: 1870s]. First edition of this rare anonymous manual for the general education of writers of classical Chinese from late Chosŏn Korea. The term "bamboo slips" originally referred to the material supports of writing in antiquity. In classical Chinese usage of later ages - and in this title - the phrase was used metonymically in reference to the implements and genres of classical Chinese writing. This book covers the four "rites" of capping, marriage, funerals, and sacrifices. Each rite had specific genres associated with it, which a reader of the book would learn to practice. Ample advice is included for writing letters to parents, children, teachers, and friends - and words to use when referring to these individuals - as well as servants and slaves. While focused on the acquisition of everyday writing skills in classical… Read More

Description:
3, 6, 67 folding leaves. Large 8vo, orig. yellow patterned wrappers (wrappers a little soiled), orig. block-printed title label on upper cover, new stitching. [Hansŏng: Mugyo sinp'an, 1869]. First edition of a rare anonymous manual for the general education of writers of classical Chinese from late Chosŏn Korea. The terms "bamboo slips" and "wooden tablets" originally referred to the material supports of writing in antiquity. In classical Chinese usage of later ages - and in this title - the phrases were used metonymically in reference to the implements and genres of classical Chinese writing. The Essentials of the Bamboo Slips and Wooden Tablets is a thematically arranged guide for letter writing. The table of contents lists occasions on which to write letters, beginning with "seasons greetings" category, such as "invitation for the new year" (wŏn'il ch'ŏng 元日請). Also included are phrases to aid in compositions on other themes, such as "political matters," "marriages," and "sojourning."… Read More

Description:
76; 69; 89; 83 folding leaves. Four fascicles in four volumes. Large 8vo, orig. patterned semi-stiff wrappers, new stitching. [Kyŏngsong: Chŏng Chae-yŏl], 1936. A rare woodblock edition; the first edition appeared in 1669, with subsequent editions in 1711 and 1845. The book is a reprint of a so-called gazetteer - a local history divided into treatises on various topics - for the city of Kyŏngju in present-day South Korea (Kŭmo is an alternative name for Kyŏngju). Kyŏngju was the "Eastern Capital" of the Silla Kingdom (57 BCE-935 CE) and is today a UNESCO World Heritage site, replete with numerous historical remains such as temples, stone pagodas, imperial mausoleums, mounds, and castle sites. The treatises cover topics such as geography, famous families, palaces, temples, virtuous local women, and local lore. It is an example of a book from a genre with a long history in Korea and continental East Asia more broadly. The book is entirely written in classical Chinese rather than Korean,… Read More

18 woodcut illus. (several color-printed). 23; 25 folding leaves. Two vols. 8vo, orig. yellow wrappers (wrappers a little soiled), new stitching. [Japan]: Preface dated "1851," published in 1852. First edition and very rare. Kikuchi (fl. 1848-64), was responsible for starting a new age of Japanese veterinary medicine (see Alexander Kast, "Johannes Ludwig Janson, Professor of Veterinary Medicine in Tokyo in 1880-1902" in Acta med-hist Adriat (2010); 8 (1), p. 116). Before this work, all books on veterinary medicine published in Japan were either entirely dependent on Korean or Chinese traditions or were mere translations of Dutch texts that had passed through Dejima Island at Nagasaki. This book was the first work by a Japanese horse doctor to contain the author's own independent observations, gained by his own dissections and experiences. Kikuchi studied in the Taishi-ryu school of horse medicine, which was founded in Japan in 595 and was based on Korean concepts. While Kikuchi had a classical… Read More

Description:
84.5; 89 folding leaves. Two vols. 8vo (275 x 190 mm.), orig. blue semi-stiff wrappers (wrappers wormed), new stitching. [Japan, probably Kyoto]: colophon dated 1614. A rare Japanese edition of a manual for classical Chinese composition ascribed to Huang Jian 黃堅, allegedly of the Song dynasty. The earliest edition was published in China and has a Preface dated 1502. The book contains examples of classical Chinese writings classified by genre. These include poetry, such as rhapsodies (fu 賦), and prose, such as essays (wen 文), biographies (zhuan 傳), and stelae (bei 碑). The "ancient prose" (Ch.: guwen; J.: kobun 古文) advertised in the title of the book was pioneered in the Tang dynasty as a literary style based on the writings of China's pre-Buddhist past. Our edition is Japanese, but editions of the book are also known from China and Korea. The present edition was printed with kunten marks to facilitate reading in Japanese. The early Edo period saw a number of editions - a testament… Read More

Many fine woodcuts printed in color & many with blind-embossing. Five vols. 8vo, orig. patterned mica-speckled wrappers (some worming carefully repaired), orig. block-printed title labels on upper covers (all the labels a little wormed), new stitching. Osaka: Uozaki Motosaburo [& four others] & Kyoto: Nishimura Kichibei, 1813. First edition, fine and thick-paper copy with special refined coloring and blind embossing of many of the woodcuts, of this important anatomical work which collects the records of three dissections performed in Kyoto in 1783, 1798, and 1802. The author explains them based on theories of both traditional Chinese medicine as well as Western medicine. "A Japanese treatise on anatomy and anatomical dissection in five volumes was published in 1813 by Shoshui or Boku or Koki Mitani (1774-1823) with the title Kaitai hatsumo. This was not the first original Japanese work on dissection, since priority in that respect had been established by the appearance in 1759 of the Zo-shi of Toyo… Read More

96 folding leaves. Two juan in one vol. Large 8vo (295 x 205 mm.), orig. patterned brown semi-stiff wrappers, new stitching. [Korea]: Preface and colophon dated 1917. First edition and rare; we find no copy of our first edition in WorldCat. This work contains invaluable observations on Chinese customs and cultural objects, including clothing, magnificent tombs and dwellings, the abundance of local products, farming techniques, and city life. "A classicist who reads ten thousand chapters worth of books should travel ten thousand li worth of road, and then what he sees and hears will expand his inner horizons. If not, then he will be writing clichés. Not leaving one's home to wander is to be like the "frog in the well" [who thought that the well amounted to the whole world and knew nothing of what lay outside it]." These are the words of Shen Qiqian 沈起潛, a native of Hangzhou in Zhejiang in southern China, who wrote a Preface for this collection of prose and poetry related to Ch'oe… Read More

Many woodcut illustrations, including five double-page woodcuts. 30; 29; 29 folding leaves. Three vols. 8vo, orig. patterned semi-stiff wrappers, orig. block-printed title labels on upper covers, new stitching. Kyoto: Ten'nojiya Ichirobei, 1743. First edition. "The author Nakane Genjun (1701-1761) was a Wasan and calendar scholar. He was the son of Nakane Genkei (1662-1733). This book is not a systematized Wasan book but one that is mainly compiled from mathematical recreations, featuring inserted illustrations throughout. It freely covers an assortment of both hard (academic) and soft (recreational) materials... "At the end, it introduces the results of the fields into which most research efforts were poured in those days, such as Kohaijutsu. It was Kasai who wrote the afterword to the book; he was a disciple of Nakane, and his principal occupation was the operator of a bookstore called Ten'nojiya. After this, Ten'nojiya would become the sole bookstore that undertook the publication of major… Read More

Seven double-page (one of which has flaps & folds out into a four-panel scene) and two single-page woodcuts, all finely color-printed, and nine double-page black & white woodcuts. One color-printed title-page pasted down on inner upper wrapper, 24 folding leaves. Small 8vo, orig. color-printed upper wrapper, with embossing, decorated lower wrapper, new stitching. [Edo]: Preface dated 1864. First edition and very rare; we find no copy in WorldCat. The Preface was written by Tanekiyo Ryusuitei (1823-1907), using his pen name "Insuitei." Following one of the frequent fires in the famous pleasure quarters of Yoshiwara, often started by the prostitutes in an effort to free themselves, many brothels temporarily re-established themselves in other locations throughout Edo. This book was issued as sort of a guide to the newly relocated brothels and very much reflects the changes that shunga books were going through during the end of the Edo period. The first double-page woodcut depicts the exterior of a… Read More

26 pages of illus. & diagrams. 79; 47 folding leaves. Seven juan in two vols. Large 8vo (286 x 200 mm.), orig. semi-stiff wrappers (wrappers tired & upper wrapper of first vol. partly defective), new stitching. [Korea]: Chosŏn period. The organization of family and clan life was an important part of East Asian Confucianism. The topic accordingly occupied Zhu Xi (1130-1200), one of the most influential thinkers of the past millennium. He was among a number of scholars who wrote treatises that outlined family rituals under the Song dynasty. These treatises were in part a reaction against Buddhism and other belief systems that to a large degree determined social life in the period. Zhu Xi's book in this genre was the most important of them all. According to Patricia Ebrey, "upon its publication in the early thirteenth century, [Zhu Xi's] Family Rituals quickly became the standard reference work on the proper way to perform family rituals, not merely displacing earlier books...but largely eliminating… Read More
