André Gill (17 October 1840 – 1 May 1885) Gill was the most popular and important French caricaturist of his time, k nown today mostly for his work for the weekly four-sheet satirica l newspapers La Lune and L’Eclipse from 1865 to 1876. Waging wa r against the monarchy with his cartoons, he also became involved in the Paris Commune, illustrating for Jules Vallès' socialist paper, La Rue. Between 1868 and 1873 more than 60 of his cartoons were censored or suppressed. .

A detailed account of the fighting between the Modoc Indians and US troops in Northern California during the first half of 1873, following the alleged murder of unarmed peace commissioners sent by President Grant. This includes accounts of battles with Modoc leader Captain Jack and his band near what is now Lava Beds National Monument. Gillem offers both a detailed report on the battles of Sand Butte and Dry Lake. as well as a defense of his actions at the "Lava Beds" for which he was later criticized. A good+ copy with several nicks on the binding edge, toning and substantial chipping to last tpage, creasing to last four leaves.

Heinrich Kley (1863 – 1945) was a German painter, illustrator and editorial cartoonist.
After a variety of commercial and industrial engagements, Kley attained notoriety with darkly satirical pen and ink drawings, published in the satirical magzines Jugend and Simplicissimus.
This is his first album, with several hundred pen and ink sketches depicting the absurdity of the human condition: church, marriage, fashionable ladies and pompous gentlemen, clothes and customs and character traits. Kley repeatedly uses anthropomorphic characters: elephants, apes, horses, in human poses – illustrating the spectacle of humans caught in ridiculous situations and grotesque positions.

First edition. 243pp. Illus. The Honda Point disaster is the largest peacetime loss of U.S. Navy ships. On the evening of September 8, 1923, seven destroyers ran aground at Honda Point, a few miles from the northern side of the Santa Barbara Channel. Twenty-three sailors died in the disaster. This history of the incident is a relatively common and inexpensive book. But accompanying it are 13 vintage 3x5" b/w photographs, 8 original b/w negatives with different images, and 9 b/w photos from the negatives, possibly printed later. The book is good in d/w. The photos were apparently taken by an amateur photographer at the scene; none of the photos appear in the book. The photos are VG, with the vintage photos glued to album pages.
