Description:
Claremont: D & R Publishing, 1958-60. First edition of this influential little magazine. There were three other issues pubished (Vol. I. No. 12 and Vol. II, nos. 1-2) but in Number 11 the editors announced that it was their plan to become an ad-free publiscation. Hence it's demise. After the 14th issue it became part of the "Southern California Prompter" and then, in 1961, it became the magazine we know today - "Los Angeles Magazine". Each issue was separately paginated (36 pp. in the first issue and 30 pp. in the last). Illustrated throughout. Bound in red cloth with gilt cover lettering. Wrappers bound in. Excellent. L.A. was, at the time, the only magazine devoted to all things Los Angeles. Although founded by three partners, it was really the child of Myron Roberts (who penned many of the articles herein under a pseudonym). It was a lightly left of center magazine and was quite influential during it's short life and lured a number of famous writers to its pages. The Beat movement was in full… Read More

Description:
Adams, MA: L. L. Brown Paper Cp., 1887. Octavo (6 1/2 x 10 inches). [36] leaves of which all but five are actual paper specimens and identified at the top (i.e. "Super Royal 54 lb"). Publisher's faux morocco red cloth with silver lettering in front. Original hanging ribbon present and in good condition. At first glance this item appears to be in such fine condition that we worried it was a facsimile but it is not. A gorgeous copy. The L. L. Brown Paper Company was founded by Levi Lawrence Brown in 1849. He was born in Adams in 1826 (also the birthplace of Susan B. Anthony). After learning the paper trade at the Crane Mills in Dalton, Brown started his own business manufacturing high quality ledger paper which he sold in major cities from coast to coast. His fine linen paper was used also for the printing of several of Mark Twain’s books.

Wallingford, CT: Judd Company, [ca. 1920}. Cast iron and painted. #9916. 6 x 6 inches, depth: 2 1/4 inches. Wonderful condition with felts still present. In the early 1910s, they began to produce a decorative art metal line of fine-quality sand castings in iron, brass and bronze. Among these items were bookends and book racks, which were produced between 1910 and the late 1930s. Judd identified their bookends with a 9000 series stock number. The prefix “0” was used in front of the 9000 series number on iron castings only when the same design was cast in both bronze and iron.

Old darkly translucent stain on pp. 77-97 (result of a spill of some sort) but eminently legible. Aside from that issue this is a lovely copy in the original and very well preserved original cloth. Description:
London and Bombay: Smith, Elder & Co., 1915. First edition. Liii, [1], 87, [1] pp. Publisher's plain brown boards with remains of paper spine label. Some pinhole worming, front endpaper excised but a very good and clean copy. A convoluted legal matter among the Muslims of the Bengal area. "The Muslim peasantry of eastern Bengal appears to have in part hung on its strong embrace of a powerful association between Islam and the plough. The Faraizi slogan langal jar, jami tar (“the land belongs to the tiller”) implied that bringing land under cultivation constituted the basis for a claim to its ongoing possession, or even to property in it. This idea was, as we have seen, hardly peculiar to the nineteenth century or exclusive to Muslim Bengal. But it was nonetheless a claim whose appeal to religious authority was unlikely to have found much of a foundation in the currents of Hanafi jurisprudence that had been elaborated in the period from the sixteenth through eighteenth centuries when Muslim… Read More

[Spain]: [Illegible], [ca. 1890]. Sight size of 21 1/2 x 17 1/2 inches with the (original?) frame measuring 24 3/8 x 20 1/2 inches. Framed and glazed. Very good. The Gate of Justice is the largest of the entrances into the castle of Alhambra. The Arabic name for the gate was long believed to refer to Islamic justice or law - charia. But in fact this was a misinterpretation for a similar-sounding word, and it has been shown that the translation should be Gate of the Esplanade. Its multiple arches are decorated with the Hand of Fatima, Mohammed's daughter, and the key to the Islamic paradise, as well as a Virgin and Child placed there by the Catholic Monarchs to consecrate the gate for Christianity.

Description:
N.p.: N.p., [1880-1925]. This impressive and important archive consists of over 1,500 manuscript pages and more than 850 hand-drawn illustrations, by Rossi-Diehl between the 1880s and 1925. Included are complete manuscripts, drafts of manuscripts, lesson plans and notes, designs, teachers’ aids, and miscellaneous papers relating to art education, especially what Rossi-Diehl called Form – Language, along with geometric designs, the art of Nature (for instance, the Acanthus leaf), and other rather esoteric art-related subjects. Rossi-Diehl often quotes Goethe and other philosophers, and cites biblical references, as he attempts to explain his concept of art and its meaningfulness to mankind and his belief that Nature is art’s pure form. Also included in the collection are four writings by Rossi-Diehl regarding social issues, war and politics, and two interesting “letters” addressed to Samuel L. Clemens and the director of the Leopold Schepp Foundation (both listed below under… Read More
