Romae [Rome]: Bartholomaeum Grassium, 1585.. Folio. (viii), 531, (23) pp. A fine 17th century Louis XIV binding with his crest featuring the letter "L" at its centre to the upper board, gilt rules with fleur-de-lys cornerpieces, spine with raised bands, gilt lettered to one panel and decorated to the other compartments with slightly ciphered double "N" initials, all edges gilt, marbled pastedowns with the later armorial bookplate of one James McDonald to the front. Inserted at the start of the volume is a prize letterpress announcement from the Collège de Navarre with manuscript additions giving the name of recipient and the names of the schoolmasters Andreas Guiganrd and Nicolaus Tavernier, two ownership inscriptions to the title, some neat early annotations to the front and rear endpapers and also some marginalia mostly to the first part of the text. (iv), 288 pp. A fine contemporary unsigned binding in the Arts and Crafts style of red full crushed morocco, spine with raised bands, gilt lettered to one panel, the others with ornate gilt decoration featuring an elaborate flower and leaf motif with surrounding gilt dots, both boards featuring a similar repeated design, gilt ruled inner dentelles with matching floral cornerpieces, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Some light wear to the head of the upper joint, a delightful copy.

Vinegia [Venice]: Appresso Gabriel Giolito, 1568.. 4to, (lxxviii), 819, (1, xxiv), 173, (3) pp. Woodcut portrait frontispiece. Worming and some loss to the lower corner of the fly leaf and first 16 leaves, the final two leaves of the Life of Guicciardini misbound in the middle of the previous gathering, bookplate of Thomas de Grey, Baron Grantham, with a small associated manuscript library label to the foot of the paste down. Late 18th century speckled calf, blind rules to covers, "Newby Hall" in gilt to the upper cover, red morocco spine label, rebacked retaining the original backstrip. An early edition of Guicciardini's account of Italian history in the late 15th and early 16th centuries. De Grey inherited Newby Hall, near Ripon in North Yorkshire, from his cousin in 1792, adapting the dining room designed by Robert Adam to be his library. Later Earl de Grey, he was Lord Lieutenant of Ireland from 1841-44.

Some mild rubbing to the gilt and a little sunning, otherwise a lovely example of an accomplished amateur binding.
