Description:
New York: Boni & Liveright, 1924. "The Dram" was first published in 1877, the seventh novel in a twenty-part series by the great French realist. This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of the First Edition Thus, which is LIMITED to 2050 sets. Rather uncommon. The translation from the original French is by Arthur Symons, authorized by Zola. Included is an essay by Robert H. Sherard (1861-1943), the first biographer of Oscar Wilde, who wrote one for Zola in 1893. Large octavo. Smooth green cloth binding (now faded to tan on the spine) with a gilt reproduction of Zola's signature on the front cover; paper label on spine. Clean text; 468 pages; all pages rough-cut. There is a small label from a previous-owner on the FFEP; attached to the rear paste-down is another spine label (not darkened!). A solid copy and because of its large format (and typeface), a great way to experience Zola. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. First Thus.. Hard Cover. Very Good Plus/No Jacket.

Description:
Stockholm: Jan Forlag, 1953. This is a Very Good copy of the First "Continental" Edition, in English but printed in Sweden. At this time the book was still under ban, and the copyright page states: "This edition not to be soldin the British Empire orU.S.A." This contains the unexpurgated text from 1928. Issued in softcover, the cream-colored paper does look a bit used at the edges and has some light smudging on the front cover, but what would one expect unless it had beenput away in a dark closet, say, for several decades? There is also a light crease on the rear cover, a diagonal chip to the lower front corner. A closed tear has been repaired with cello tape. Really, not too bad for what is now a period piece of literary history. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. First Thus.. Soft Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. Privately Printed.

William Faro, Inc., 1930. D.H. Lawrence (1885-1930) wrote "Chatterley" in 1928, and it remained controversial for four decades. This is a Very Good (Minus) copy of the First Edition Thus, a "pirate edition" published by Samuel Roth (1893-1974) under his William Faro imprint. Roth has become infamous as a nice Jewish boy gone bad; he was prosecuted and jailed several times as a pornographer for publishing works that seem mild today; James Joyce enjoined him for a pirated edition of "Ulysses." Although an Orthodox Jew, he wrote and published an anti-Semitic screed. He particularly disliked J. Edgar Hoover, and ultimately, he may be a literary hero (with more than one tragic flaw). An unexpurgated European version came out in 1928 (Tauchintz), but the book was not legally published in America until 1959, so this version, although illegal, could be called the First American Edition. Description:
Bridgeport: M. Sherman, 1828. Mary Martha Sherwood (1775-1851) was a prolific (some 400 works!) and very popular author of children's literature, mainly written from her evangelical Christian position. She was well-educated, having both Latin and Greek and (later) Hebrew. An educational reformer, she was profoundly anti-Catholic in her many tracts for the poor. Here are four volumes only of her "Lady of the Manor," which was written in a series starting in 1823. Uniform orange paper-covered boards with paper labels on the spines. Clean texts; included are Volume One (360 pages), Volume IV (360 pages), Volume V (300 pages), and Volume VII (394 pages). All volumes bear an 1828 date, and are generally in Very Good condition. All have frontis engravings which are typically foxed and have transfered to the Title Pages. Endpapers very well spotted. The label for Volume VII has been heavily rubbed. The publisher, Sherman, is unknown to Quercus; later, her American publisher was Harper. Quercus… Read More
