2 Vols. set : Vol. 1) The Deluxe limited edition published by Batsford in 1942. One of only 100 copies printed on handmade paper and Signed by both the Author and Rex Whistler to the limitation page. The BOOK is in Very Good++ or better condition with the publisher s original quarter dark green morocco, spine lettered in gilt, mid-green cloth sides, top edge green. The spine has only a hint of rubbing and is not toned or faded. Light rubbing to the lower cover edges. Internally clean. 22 illustrations by Rex Whistler, 2 colour-printed and a number full-page. The book is protected in a loose glassine archival cover. An extremely handsome copy of a title which, when it does appear on the market often appears with a very rubbed and faded spine. Whistler was to sadly die in service 2yrs later, so I am presuming, this was one of the very last book commissions he undertook. Vol. 2) The First UK Trade edition published by Batsford. Description:
The true First Printing published by Secker and Warburg in 1929. This is number 1 of one hundred and twenty five copies specially printed on vellum paper each numbered and signed by the author. Interestingly although this copy is numbered '1' , it appears to be unsigned. The BOOK is in Very Good++ or better condition. Light pushing at the spine ends with a little fraying at the lower spine tip. Light soiling to the boards. Gilt titling remains bright. Light spotting and a few minor marks to the end-papers. Mild toning to the text-block and page edges. Free from inscriptions and erasures. Fascimile handwriting and illustrations throughout, by the author. Seen as a risqué publication when it first appeared, this "comical fantasia" [Tennant's own words] is a rather camp tale of the Rev Littlejohn and two lady companions who embark on a missionary expedition to the deepest jungle. Tennant was a British socialite known for his decadent lifestyle. He was called 'the brightest' of the 'Bright Young People'.… Read more
