Description:
Image: 12,5x9,5 cm. Frame: 21x17,5 cm. In a contemporary frame. Mint. Provenance: lot 114 in Etude Couturier Nicolay sale of Guillaume Apollinaire collection, 25th of June, 1986. This portrait was created on the rear side of an invitation to a debut exhibition of Gallerie Paul Guillaume - a solo show of Mikhail Larionov and Natalia Goncharova. Paul Guillaume (1891-1934) was one of the 20th century greatest art dealers. He was a dealer of Chaïm Soutine, Amedeo Modigliani, Pablo Picasso, and others. Also, he was a pioneer of African art exhibitions and thus met with Guillaume Apollinaire (1880-1918). Paul Guillaume opened his first gallery in February 1914 at 6, rue de Miromesnil. Larionov traveled to Paris earlier. In 1906, Diaghilev organized a large retrospective exhibition of Russian art at the Grand Palais, included the artist's paintings in the exhibition and invited him himself, albeit as a worker, to mount M. Vrubel's panels. A joint visit of Larionov and Goncharova to Paris took place in… Read More

Kiev: Kultur-Lige, 1930. 221, [2] pp. 21x15 cm. In original constructivist wrappers. Uncut. Fragment of the spine lost, tears of covers, contemporary Ukrainian institute stamps and notes, otherwise very good. Lifetime edition. One of 3000 copies. In Yiddish. This book came out as a part of a Kultur-Lige series 'Bibliotek Yidishe shrayber' [Library of Yiddish Writers], issue 14, with the introduction by Jewish literary critic Boris Orshanskii (1884-1945). Constructivist cover design combines typographic linear borders and a drawn element. All issues of the series were published in the similar designs differing the main color only. Founded in Kiev in early 1918, an organization Kultur Lige enlisted practically all the Yiddish cultural, political, scholarly figures of any fame that lived in Ukraine. It rapidly increased the number of independent branches outside Ukraine and gained the leading position in Jewish social and cultural life. Jewish kindergartens, schools, evening courses, art and… Read More

[Riga]: Izglitibas ministrijas izdevums, 1930. 149, [3] pp.: ill., 2 maps. 22,5x16,5 cm. In original illustrated wrappers. Very rare example of Belarusian textbooks printed in Latvia in the interwar period. Translated into Belarusian by Piatro Massal'ski. According to this particular book and common statistics, about 36 thousand Belarusians lived in Latvia in the 1930s (in contrast to 76,000 in 1921). After the Ulmanis' Coup (1934), Belarusian education gradually began to cease and wasn't restored after World War II. The book contains mass information about Latvia and the whole world, the text is supplemented with numerous photographs, drawings, charts. At the end of the book, two colored maps of Latvia (political and physical) are printed on separate leaves. All materials were divided into four sections. The first one included basic issues about cardinal points, scale, distance, landscape diversity, the Earth's interior and volcanism, water bodies in Latvia and around it, climate and… Read More

Description:
Tiflis: K.P. Kozlovsky, 1917. 378 pp. 24x16 cm. Original printed wrappers. Spine is restored. Some stains of the wrapper. Otherwise good. The bulletin features the geological article by Ilia Zdanevich 'Two Attempts to Climb Tbilisis-tsveri (4419 meters) in Uilpaty Mountains'. In the article Ilia described the efforts of the group of mountaineers to conquer the mountain in Adjara (now - north of Turkey). 10 page article is written in a very candid of cial language, quite opposite from the zaum and language of Zdanevich's futurist books. The efforts took place in the summer of 1916. On p. 274 there's more information on Zdanevich's journey, in couple of paragraphs it is summed up. There is a notion that Zdanevich saw previously unknown mountain in the area that he gave the name 'Le Dantu'. The paragraph doesn't say that but looks like Zdanevich named the mountain after his fellow artist and soulmate Mikhail Le Dantu (1889-1917), who worked alongside him in Ti is and in Saint Petersburg. The year the… Read More

Knigoizdate'stvo Akademii khudozhetsv: [Leningrad], 1927. 77, [3] pp.: ill. 18x13 cm. In original illustrated wrappers. Near fine copy. Tiny tear of the spine. First edition of the first book. Yakov Chernikhov (1889-1951) was one of the most unusual and innovative talents of the time, known for his Architectural Fantasies, and here are these fantasies in the making. This is a textbook on a special subject developed Chernikhov himself, which he called «the art of graphic representation». It was not a drawing textbook, as one might understand from the title. Under the old-fashioned title Chernikhov meant something very modern. It is about graphic, spatial, and abstract compositions, and seeks to encourage students to use lines, planes, and solid to express beauty and movement without depicting anything known or recognizable, experimenting with all the boundless possibilities open to them. This book was designed for beginners, for people who had not so far been involved in drawing, and not burdened… Read More

Moscow: Gosudarstvennoe izdatel'stvo, 1930. 160 pp. 18,5x12,5 cm. In original cloth with colored lettering on front cover and spine, with original dust jacket with letterpress design by unknown artist. Dust jacket occasionally repaired, with tears and small losses of edges, but book is in fine condition. Second, revised and enlarged edition. One of 3000 copies. Very rare. Dust jacket displays an expressive, 'dancing' design of the title consisting of black and white letters printed on the red background. This is the only constructivist design produced for 'Ulialaevshchina' editions. This is the early version of the most successful epic poem by constructivist poet Il'ia Sel'vinskii (1899-1968). The text was first published in 1927. Initially, the author wrote about the fortunes of a kulak Ulialaev who was defeated by the Red Army during an anarchist kulaks' rebellion. And this character was described more expressive than the Communists. In the late 1920s, this leftist poem was performed by the… Read More

Moscow: izdatelstvo komissii pomoshchi detiam pri prezidiume Mossoveta, 1924. 224 pp.: ill. 34x26,5. Original illustrated cardboard. Few bumps of the edges, but generally a very good copy. First edition. One of 10000 copies produced. Very rare. Of all the kaleidoscope of the editions dedicated to the death of Lenin, this one gives the widest overview of the perception of the leader at the time. The contributors of the collection are numerous and eclectic, and the man, responsible for putting the materials together - the professor of medicine, one of the organisers of the Soviet medical system, Nikolay Semashko (1874-1949), who knew Lenin quite well, fits perfectly for the purpose. The different sides of Lenin's life are represented in the panegyric: his economical views, the approach towards the science, foreign policy, etc. The whole edition could be considered naive comparing to the propaganda o fthe mid-, late- 1930s, when the art of praise of the 'great leaders' was taken to the new levels, but… Read More

Bumped edges of oversized covers, small tear of the spine and a few spots on front cover, otherwise a very good and clean copy. First and only Russian edition. One of 3000 copies. Since he typeset all elements of both covers, they look like components from different dimensions. This is one of a few handbooks on printing that was published in the Soviet Union in the 1920s. At that time, typesetting practice lacked relevant handbooks and manuals, the craft was mostly promoted by skilled workers. The book was translated and revised by L.A. Tumerman. [Moscow] OGIZ Gospolitizdat, 1943. 50, [1] pp.: ill. 16,5x11 cm. In original illustrated publisher's wrappers. Some general wear and tears of the covers. Otherwise very good. Scarce. First edition. Edited by V. Binder. During the Great Patriotic War, the theme of forced labor was widely employed in Soviet anti-Nazi propaganda. From 1942, when the first mass deportations of Soviet citizens to Nazi Germany started, the sufferings of this group occupied an important place in Soviet media. Published at the height of the deportation wave, this book is a compilation of striking letters written by the Ostarbeiters that were gathered from occupied territories of the USSR and sent to perform forced labor in Germany. Drawing upon the nature of the correspondence and the fact that the Nazis primarily deported Soviet youth, it can be assumed that most authors of the letters were under the age of 20. In the correspondence, the Ostarbeiters tell their family members about the harsh conditions (starvation,… Read More

Early Soviet dictionary of Ukrainian words with explanations in Russian. The foreword in Ukrainian. The number of Ukrainian newspapers, which almost didn't exist in 1922, had reached 373 out of 426, while only 3 all-republican large newspapers remained Russian. Of 118 magazines, 89 were Ukrainian. Ukrainization of book-publishing reached 83% (Wikipedia). Along with the promotion of Ukrainian arts and literature, scientific study of the language enjoyed a widespread revival. A nice and early Soviet brochure on how to write by the library handwriting on the catalogue cards. Teaching the young librarian on courses, Lomkovskii created the tables of letter elements and connection between them, supporting examples with clear and define instructions. Interesting that three pre-revolutionary letters, used until the Russian orthography was reformed in 1917, were included in this manual as well - the author explained that by needs of the science libraries. He points out the standard sizes of letters, with exceptions and spaces. Moscow: Krug, 1923. 85, [9] pp. 13,5x11 cm. In original printed wrappers. Restored, otherwise very good and clean copy. Ownership (embossed) blindstamp of Ernest Heitetz. One of 3000 copies. Constructivist publisher's mark (on half title and back cover) created by Iu. Annenkov. There are four lifetime editions of Osip Mandelstam's poetry.
