Marble endpapers [iv] 103 [10]pp with 16 tipped in coloured plates with captioned tissue guards, 7 full page black and white illustrations and 7 within the text all by Arthur Rackham. The text pages are set within a triple red line border and have decorative initial letters, head and tail pieces to each story. Original covers bound in. There is some dust staining and marking to the vellum with a 1.2 cm split across the spine about two-thirds of the way down. Some rubbing and bumping to the edges of the paper covered boards with loss to the paper on the bottom corners and to a much lesser extent on the top corners. Together with a T.L.S. from Le Guin to Malcolm Edwards the then editor of a Science Fiction Fanzine called Quicksilver, dated 20th April 1971. In it she addresses questions about 'The Left Hand of Darkness' and the first printing of her short story, 'Winter's King' in Orbit 5' (copy included) which she refers to in the letter as "the genesis of the story". A clean bright book without name inscription or bookplate and just a tiny Foyles label on the verso of the front free endpaper. All in all a very nice copy of this history of France's 19th Century military history between 1815 and 1871 with some fantastic JOB illustrations. Uncut edges, black endpapers; Volume I vii (i) 289(3)pp, Volume II vii(i) 312pp, Volume III vii(i) 292pp. The boards on all volumes are a little dust marked as would be expected, although there is no fading, and all have pushing but only a hint of rubbing on the spine tips. Volume I has a little cockling to the front board and rubbing along the fore edge of the front board with the cloth rubbed through for 1.5 cm at the top. The other two volumes have pushing to the top corners and the cloth on Volume III is rubbed through for 0.5 cm along the top edge. Internally all three volumes are very clean and without name, inscription or bookplate. There is no cracking and only a few very light marks. 'My Dear Brigadier, This is just a line to say how very gratefull (sic) I am to you for having taken me round the Tower yourself last Thursday and for making my visit such a pleasant one. St Thomas' Tower, will I am sure, 'fit the bill' as far as my book is concerned; and I feel now, thanks to you, that I shall be able to make the escape part of my story plausible. I may, after all, call the book 'Traitor's Gate', as the Wallace book was published many years ago and there is no copyright in titles. (Two of my own have been used by other people only last year). I am all against duplication in the ordinary way, but in this case the title would be so sensible. I'll have to think about it. These items are difficult to date but it is pre 1940 and the images suggest it is earlier rather than later. A really lovely example with only a little patchy toning the covers. The binding is firm although the staples are a little rusted as would be expected in a book of this age but there is only a hint of rubbing to the spine tips. This book is in much better condition than is usually found and looks hardly read. An excellent and early and scarce addition to any Ladybird collection.
