189 x 120 mm.
First complete edition, partly original, of the first novel of anticipation, the first to include three volumes. This work, pioneer of the literature of anticipation, transports the author in the future within a society where are put in practice the ideas of the lights; it knew a considerable European repercussion.
L'An 2440, a dream if ever there was one, can be considered as the first novel of anticipation in which one finds the program of the philosophy of the Enlightenment. It is the first utopia that is located elsewhere in time, and not on another Earth. It expresses the contrast between the system of absolutism and a free society, although still… Read More

First edition.
Vicaire,
Manuel de l'amateur de livres du XIXe siècle, 726.
Story of a young man, started at the end of 1863 and written from September 1864 to May 1869, "L'Education sentimentale" was published in November 1869. Even though it is full of autobiographical details, the work has nothing in common with the youth novel written under this title in 1845.
The enchantress presence of Madame Arnoux who is predominant in the entire work as Madame Schlesinger was in Flaubert's thoughts, makes most certainly this novel an indisputable testimony on the writer's sentimental life, with the interferences and the cross reference between dream and reality that this work is the bitter and burning… Read More

True second edition of one of the most important works of French 17th century literature.
Tchemerzine, III, 840-841.
Published on March 17th 1678, the book was very successful: Mme de Sévigné proclaimed her enthusiasm; Fontenelle read and read again the book four times; Boursault made a tragedy in five acts of it; Valincour inflamed public opinion with his " Letters...
" to which the abbot of Charnes answered.
If Mme de la Fayette denies her taking part in the writing of this work in a letter dated April 1678, one cannot doubt anymore that she wrote the book, influenced by her close friend La Rochefoucault and advised by Segrais.
This true second edition printed in large characters takes up the first edition,… Read More

Paris, Antoine Estienne, 1629.
Folio [359 x 246 mm] of (6) ll., 224 pp., (22) ll., numerous figures and maps in the text, handwritten ex libris crossed out on the title. Limp vellum, flat spine with gilt-stamped title. Contemporary binding.
First edition of this singular and very rare work, composed by the one who was considered in his time as the Prince of chronologists.
Renouard, 219:7.
The author, who was secretary to Henri de Bourbon, duke of Montpensier (1573-1608), converted to Catholicism in 1596.
In this work, he wants to show that geography "is all taken from the pure text of the Scriptures" and he therefore follows the biblical chronology, which he illustrates with telling figures.
We follow the evolution of the earth from the original chaos (in a black circle) to the seventh day (where the four rivers of creation draw what looks like the contours of the continents...). Everything changes with the flood, which upsets this beautiful order, creating continents and leaving a disfigured… Read More
