René Julliard, Paris., 1960. First edition. Octavo. 276 pages. Original wrappers. Service de Presse copy with ''S.P.'' printed on rear cover. The author's second novel.Presentation copy from the author to Jean-Paul Sartre, inscribed on the half-title: "A Sartre - très affectueusement". Sartre, not a man one equates with paternalistic feelings, called Todd his "rebel son" and wrote the Preface to his first book Une demi-campagne (Julliard, 1956). Todd, from his side, said of Sartre: “He was important in my life – perhaps the father figure I needed''. He rejected, however, Sartre's philosophy and saw his abiding faith in Communism as having sprung from the hatred he felt for the French middle class. Covers a little marked. Very good indeed.
