L'Ami des Hommes, ou Traité de la Population

MIRABEAU, Victor de Riquetti, Marquis de & QUESNAY, François

  • Quantity available: 1
Six parts bound in two vols. Large 4to, cont. polished mottled calf, spines nicely gilt. Avignon, 1756-1758-[1760]. First edition of all six parts, and a fine copy, of one of the great classics of political economy. This work marks the birth of the physiocratic school and contains the first appearance on a large scale of the "Tableau Economique" of Quesnay (portions of Quesnay's work had been privately printed in a few copies only at the palace at Versailles in 1758 and 1759). In this work, Mirabeau made the ideas of Cantillon known and the book had a very great influence in the years before the Revolution. Fine set.

One folding engraved plate. xxxii, 116 pp. 8vo, cont. red morocco-backed paste-paper boards, flat spine nicely gilt. Paris: Patris, 1810. First edition. One of the great achievements of the 19th century in respect to food was the successful development of canning. The pioneer in this field was the Frenchman, Nicolas Appert (1750-1841). In Appert's process the foodstuff was placed in clean bottles, well corked, and subsequently the bottles were raised to the boiling-point of water. In this way the most perishable material could be kept unchanged for a long time. With this method Appert demonstrated practically the process of pasteurization, nearly fifty years before its scientific explanation. Appert published his discovery in the present book which served as the foundation of the vast canning industry of today and altered the food habits of man. Handsome copy with the signature of Appert against counterfeits on the verso of the half-title. Bound in between Farnaud's Exposé des Am&e ... Read more

Seven folding engraved plates. 1 p.l., iv, [2], 103 pp. 8vo, cont. mottled sheep (head & foot of spine a little defective), spine gilt. Paris: Saugrain le jeune, 1770. First edition in French of the great economist's Della Perfetta conservazione del Grano. Discorso (Naples: 1754). Like the first edition, ours was published under the name of Bartolommeo Intieri (1676-1757), economist, engineer, and mathematician, who had furnished his friend Galiani with the ideas on methods to prevent grain from being contaminated by insects. Intieri proposed that grain be dried in a heated kiln. This process would dissipate bad odors, eliminate humidity, kill most insects, and check the disposition of the grain to germinate and ferment while in storage or in transit. Although Galiani wrote the text, he had Intieri's name placed on the title-page to properly honor the aged and nearly blind scientist for his invention of the kiln stove in 1728. In spite of this, it was widely known that Galiani was ... Read more

Seventeen folding engraved plates. 10 p.l., 566, [2] pp. Large 4to, cont. marbled calf (joints & corners with very careful repairs), spine nicely gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. Paris: M. Brunet, 1722. First edition of the first comprehensive book devoted to the manufacture of iron and steel; it "laid the foundations of the steel industry in France."-Partington, III, p. 64. Réaumur was the first to recognize that steel was actually impure iron and set up the first scale of seven types of fracture of iron and steel. The fine plates are valuable for illustrating the contemporary apparatus and methods of converting iron into steel. For a detailed account of this book, see D.S.B., XI, pp. 328-30. A fine and handsome copy. Fine engraved port. of the author holding a telescope. xiv (i.e. xvi), 158 (i.e. 160) pp. 4to, cont. limp boards (boards slightly soiled, minor spotting), uncut. Venice: F. Nicolini, 1685. First edition and a lovely copy in original state. This book, a summary of Montanari's battles against astrology, aroused great interest and brought about the banning of astrology from the universities. In this work, Montanari "instead of merely fulminating against astrology or repeating old arguments, attempted to show its falsity by experiments as well. His book is furthermore written in a sober, dispassionate and impartial manner which accords well with experimental science."-Thorndike, VIII, p. 342. Montanari (1633-87), professor of mathematics at the University of Bologna, was in large part responsible for laying the groundwork for the extraordinary flowering of science in Bologna at the beginning of the 18th century. His greatest achievements were in astronomy, particularly in the study of ... Read more

Paris: Charpentier & Dumont, 1833. First edition. Desbordes-Valmore (1786-1859), poet, novelist, actress, and singer, is one of the founders of French romantic poetry. Her friend Balzac used her as the model for the title character of La Cousine Bette. She had a difficult and complicated life which is reflected in this autobiographical novel based on her stay, in 1808, with her uncle, the painter Constant Desbordes, in the old Capuchin monastery that he shared with other artists among whom were Girodet de Toussy-Trioson and François Gérard. Fine and attractive set from the Wittelsbach library of the dukes and kings of Bavaria. ❧ N.B.G., Vol. 45, cols. 95-97.
