On offer is a remarkable reference treasure trove and artifact of the Civil War - a 1913-1932 ledger of 225+ certificates of application for membership to the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, 1861-1865. The book, a 'Horn' Gum Stub File, relates to Tent No. 4, The Department of Washington and Alaska. Each woman has listed the soldier's [being their father's or in some cases their grandfather's] names, their length of service from call up to mustering out, battalions, regiments, company, reasons for discharge, current address of relatives +++. The women that filled out these certificates were applying for membership and were required to provide handwritten information on their relations. TUCKERSMITH ONTARIO ON CANADA. Good. 1893. On offer is a mid to late 1800s handwritten ledger from an unnamed general store in Tuckersmith, Ontario. The shop owner was John Thompson according to a note in the book. The ledger is made up of the all personal bills of the many patrons of the General Store. Presumably, the many customers of the general store bought on credit, and in this ledger John Thompson kept track of the prices. A normal page contains information such as who the account is of as well as what product and how much was purchased on what day: "William Allins account. Oct 16 - 2 bags flour; Oct 18 - Tea - 1; Oct 23 - Coffee, Sugar - 1; Oct 30 - Flour - 1 bag, Tea - 1; Nov. 6 - Coffee, Sugar - 1, Flour - 1 bag;...December 18 - Sugar - 1, Raisins - 1, Tea, lemons - two". The book is question is a fantastic scrapbook featuring roughly 400 illustrations spread out of over 145 pages. There are also hundreds of clippings from newspapers, magazines and books and over 20 photographs pasted onto thick paper. The owner of the book and creator of this wholly unique book is the Steamboat Captain Charles Edwin Good, captain of the steamer ‘Rose Standish’. Charles E. Good was a steamboat Captain for the Boston & Hingham Steamboat Company and the ‘Rose Standish’ was a passenger steamer that carried passengers between Boston, Hull, and Hingham, Massachusetts. On a folio sheet folded is an antique handwritten poem in an unknown hand credited to Captain Thompson [Edward, b. 1738? - 1786] titled: 'The Choice of a Wife By Cheese' about a man in York named Pimlico who put to Nancy, Betsey and Sally the task of making cheese and thereupon he chose his wife. This poem in neat hand takes up three-quarters of the page. A shorter poem described as an inscription above a doctor's door in Sussex fills the page. The names Mr. Longden and Wm. Mitchell are on the reverse. Lovely piece of British ephemera. VG.. Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. English.

On offer, two volumes in one book, being a printed version of the Gospels in Greek, bound in between blank pages wherein handwritten manuscript commentary and translation in English, by James Hume Spry, whose inscribed name appears on the free front endpapers. Research provides that the author was The Reverend John Hume Spry, Doctor of Divinity, Rector of Marlebone and Prebendary of Canterbury who died at his Residence 13 Devonshire Place in 1842. [There was a cousin James who was a Doctor of Medicine but this is clearly written by a very knowledgable and ecclesiastical minded individual. How the book's ownership is inscribed in James' name we can only surmise and making a fascinating book all the more enigmatic.] We believe this is Mr. Spry's life long work interrupted by his demise as there are pencil headings that were prepared for future writings. USA, 1899. [ABOLITIONIST] EDWARD ATKINSON [1827-1905) was a founder of the Anti-Imperialist League. He was born in Brookline, Massachusetts. In the decade before the Civil War, Atkinson was a successful entrepreneur as an executive of some of the leading cotton mills of New England. Later he was head of the Boston insurance company. He also fought against slavery by supporting the Free-Soil Party and a Boston committee to aid escaped slaves. Growing weary of compromise, he soon began raising money to pay for rifles and ammunition to support the insurgent guerrilla force of John Brown. Circa late 19th century CLIP SIGNATURE.. Autograph. The letter measures 4-1/4 x 7-1/8 inches. Autograph letter signed. One page. Dated Eastern Terrace, Monday [no day, year]. Bampfylde writes to Edward Landseer, inviting him to dinner, and signs the invitation. Augustus Frederick George Warwick Bampfylde, 2nd Baron Poltimore. British Liberal politician. Bampfylde succeeded his father in the barony in 1858. He sat on the Liberal benches in the House of Lords and served in the first Liberal administration of William Ewart Gladstone as Treasurer of the Household from 1872 to 1874.
