New York: Hurst and Company, 1890. Hardcover. Very Good +/None Issued. [ii] 168 p. [x] front. illus. 19 cm. [Green floral patterned end papers] Red pressed cloth over boards, elaborate floral decoration set in double ruled panel, stamped in both black and gilt, title inside decoration similarly contained and executed. Ditto for the spine, which is quite rubbed. [No statement of edition anywhere in pages prior to text or on cover.] Lalla Rookh is an Oriental romance by Thomas Moore, published in 1817. As a collector one could remain very happily engaged for his or her life collecting this title alone. Dozens and dozens of editions were published prior to this edition, a single volume of a set published as "Moore's Works". Book Condition: Fairly worn, tips turned, spine ends pushed. Enough gilt on the front board so the exquisite design still charms, but not so on the spine. Inside...inside it's a peach, sweet and unread, on very thick paper with a slick orange border on each page, raised, this… Read more

Tokyo: Tokyo Metropolitan Foundation for History and Culture, 1995. First Edition, First Printing. Softcover. Fine. 211 pp. : illustrations (some color), portraits ; 30 cm. 4to. Softcover. Stiff photo-illustrated French wraps. Includes scarce original transmittal envelope, an ingenious thin cardboard multi-fold chemise, addressed to Michael Feingold, the long time New York theatre credit who wrote for the Village Voice for over twenty years. Book Condition: absolutely fine, pristine. A very sharp copy. Transmittal envelope shows bumps and bruises consistent with a long journey from Tokyo to New York in a variety of mail bags but is completely intact. There's always been a certain hautiness about the superiority of the Japanese catalog's production values but having never been able to view the two editions side by side we cannot confirm or deny the truth in this preference. We can say that the reproductions in this volume are extraordinarily beautiful. The exhibition consists of works from the George… Read more

New York: Knopf, 1996. First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good +. Uncorrected Proof: Wraps. 227 pages ; 21 cm. Perfectbound wraps. Publisher's advertising printed on recto of first leaf. Book Condition: Very Good+, covers a little dusty with a crease to lower front corner. A great example of why we love these preliminary printings, uncorrected proofs especially; they represent the earliest printed edition usually, and in this case the publisher's information on front cover indicates a 100,000 copy first printing (!) planned for the first trade edition, which, while we knew Didion was a star, that's Stephen King type numbers. Suddenly the dozens of 1st printings available offered by the trade makes more sense. An enormous first printing. Also, in this case, The Knopf first edition is preceded by a special limited Franklin Library Edition; not so with our Uncorrected Proof, it preceeds even the Franklin Edition. Price includes two books, we include a copy of the hardcover First… Read more
