Although The Magic Jacket was originally published in 1923, this edition was the first to use charming illustrations by Paul Kennedy and to include nine other illustrated children's stories by de la Mare, including The Scarecrow, Maria-Fly, Alice's Grandmother, The Old Lion, Miss Jemima, The Riddle, Lucy, Visitors, and Broomsticks.The book is bound in blue covers with a circular gilt illustration on the front panel, gilt spine lettering and a design, and top-edge yellow stain. This delightful First Edition children's tale published in October, 1903, deals with a little girl and her dog's adventures, mainly in Fairyland, among gnomes, fairies, giants, and other supernatural beings. It was obviously inspired by the phenomenal success of L. Frank Baum's "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz," which first appeared three years earlier. (Substitute "Maisie and Snip" for "Dorothy and Toto.") The book includes 22 charming full-page and vignette illustrations by F.Y. Cory, the full-page ones being in partial color. All are present. The book is in Good condition. Roslyn, New York: Walter J. Black, 1945. This is one of a number of Walter J. Black titles that came into my possession recently. Despite the 1945 copyright date, the book was published during the 1950s for the Walter J. Black Classics Club. What's remarkable is the New condition, as if the book had been published yesterday and not over half a century ago. I would assume it had probably been boxed and placed in storage since its original purchase. These classic works by Marcus Aurelius, Lucian, Justin Martyr, and Walter Pater include an Introduction by Irwin Edman. The book measures 5 1/2 by 7 11/16 inches and includes 306 pages. The book is bound in a woven beige cloth, includes the club initials in a die-stamped gilt set off against a deep red cameo with a gilt border on the front panel, as well as die-stamped gilt titles against a red background and with black and gilt borders on the spine. .
