Housed within within the original cloth-backed cardboard chemise with printed lettering-piece to spine, and all within the original cloth-backed slipcase; pp. The frontispiece and six other tipped-in illustrations are by Brenda Berman. The book was designed by John Ryder. The BOOK, CHEMISE and SLIPCASE are all in Fine condition. The publisher's original prospectus for the book and their compliments slip are loosely inserted. Description:
The First UK printing published by Hamish Hamilton in 1987. The BOOK is in Very Good++ or better condition. A little pushing to the spine ends. Unfaded to the spine. The wrapper looks very attractive in the removable Brodart archival cover. Signed by the author to the title page. A ticket for the signing event accompanies this title as provenance. A very rare first UK edition from the Carnegie medal winner and former Children's Laureate. Light toning to the pastedowns. Free from inscriptions. The WRAPPER is in Good only condition with large loss to the front cover and some lesser chips to the rear panel edges and spine ends. The First UK printing published by Victor Gollancz, London in 1963. The BOOK is in near Fine condition with just some light pushing and fading at the extreme spine tips. Light toning to the text-block. A neat penned gift inscription to the front blank end-paper. Light toning to the spine and folds with a small chip to the upper spine. The wrapper remains very attractive in the removable Brodart archival cover. Loosely inserted are some contemporary newspaper reviews for this title. Thompson's classic title in which he 'felt that he had much to learn from the life experiences of his working-class students. The whole tone of his most celebrated work, 'The Making of the English Working Class' (1963), which made his reputation, testifies to this. It was fittingly dedicated to one of these students, and for all its international success it… Read more
