Stapleton, Thomas (1806 – 1849), antiquary, FRS, was elected a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries on 15 January 1839. His most important literary work was this edition of the rolls of the Norman exchequer, printed by the Society of Antiquaries as Magni rotuli scaccarii Normanniae sub regibus Angliae (2 vols., 1840 – 4), which 150 years later remains the authoritative edition of these important twelfth-century records. The De Montalt paper mill was owned by John Bally (1773 – 1854), a bookseller at Homer's Head, 11 Milsom Street in Bath, William Allan or Ellan (1781 – 1832) and George Steart (d.1837), all trading as paper-makers under the name of John Bally & Co.
A historically important unrecorded and unpublished manuscript journal hand written by Major General William Joseph Eyre Brooke (1770-1843).
William Brooke returned to the Peninsula in August 1812 to be appointed by Wellington as officer in charge of courts-martial at Lisbon. This journal is a unique and vivid eye witness account following Wellington's advances. Brooke describes the journey, accompanied by his (un-named) nephew, Assistant Surgeon [James] Harrison and Lieut. Geo Bray. He chose the title 'Adaptation and disease; the contribution of medical research to the study of evolution'. George Rose (1817-1882) a former curate in Camberwell, London. After leaving the Church of England in 1855, Rose underwent a major career change and began to write under the pseudonym Arthur Sketchley.
His fictitious character Mrs. Brown's monologues became a major success. Rose's creation was from a working class background and addressed the current topics of the day in a humorous and colloquial fashion.
