Description:
New York: Appleton, 1896. First edition thus (158 adverts). Octavo, in tan cloth with gilt, red, and black decoration and titles. The first appearance of Maggie under Crane’s name, the book having been published first in paper in 1893 under the name (chosen from the telephone book) Johnston Smith and with the parenthetic subtitle ‘A Story of New York’. With the commercial success of the Red Badge of Courage, Appleton published this hard cover edition; it comes with the curious publisher’s note claiming this was the first Maggie to see the light of day. There is more about these matters in Michael Quigley’s excellent feature article in Firsts magazine (January 1996). Covers blotched and rubbed (Appleton’s rough cloth covers had a way of ‘rusting’ in a humid atmosphere); front hinge just starting, deckle edges becoming brittle. Not the cleanest and brightest of covers, but tight and neat inside.

Description:

[London]: printed by E. and R. Nutt and sold by T. Cox at the corner of Swithin’s Alley, Cornhill, 1724.  First edition (pp. [iv], 208). Quarto (21 cm) in contemporary quarter leather over marbled paper, folding mapof Nottinghamshire by R [obert]. Morden. Cox was less the author of this volume (probably all or part of Volume IV in the series of six comprising descriptions of the counties) than a compiler or editor who worked from all the ‘best sources’ to produce a geographical description, together with the ecclesiastical, civil, natural, and literary history of each of the counties. Bookplate of John Bunn Clifton (fl. 1816).  Stains to upper corner of first few pages. Otherwise quite a good copy of a scarce title in the series.

Description:
Richard Surflet (Trans.). London: Printed by Arnold Hatfield for John Norton and John Bill, 1606. Likely the second edition, as the first edition and no other is cited in Fussell as1600 ([29] ; various prefaces, addresses, summaries; 901; [26] tables). Quarto, 18cm x 23cm, in full leather (apparently rebacked at some early date, replaced endpapers), woodcuts illustrating, for example, stills and geometry of layouts. Surflet’s translation of L’Agriculture et Maison Rustique by Estienne and Liebaut (who, in turn, translated Estienne’s Latin), a ‘voluminous treatise’ similar in scope and intent to Barnabi Googe’s Foure Bookes of Husbandrie (1577) covering ‘family life, rural diversions, and the curious medical practices of the time, as well as the principles of farming, including the layout of a farm’ (Fussell, The Old English Farming Books, 12-13), in short, an early country handbook and encyclopaedia which, if it could not bring science fully to bear on… Read more

Cambridge (Boston): Hilliard and Brown (Hilliard and Gray), 1832 (1834). First edition (vi, 675 pp., index; vii, 620 pp., index). Octavo (20 cm.), illustrations by Bowen and Hall. The two volumes complete with many engraved b&w illustrations. In original decorative blue-green cloth and paper labels, some pages unopened. In the Preface, Nuttall pays handsome tribute to his ‘eminent friend Mr. Audubon’ and regrets that ‘the whole manuscript had not been placed under his revision.’ Endpapers browned as usual, covers spotted and faded, worn. Text block is tight and clean throughout. (This seems the fate of the books’ original bindings, or at least those I have seen-- the paper-thin publisher’s cloth wears through, weakening the hinges, and the paper labels dry out and begin to flake.) A hard to find classic of American ornithology.

Ten years or so later, this same style of landscape architecture and garden design would make its appearance in the U. S. in the pattern books of Downing and Vaux and after that Olmsted. Paris, 1686. Sheet (23cm x 15cm), image (17cm x 12.5cm). B&w engraved map from das Mitternachtige America (Fig. 8) showing the eastern half of North America-- Labrador, Hudson Bay, the Great Lakes (‘Mer Douce’) and St. Lawrence River, ‘Nouvelle France’ (north of Superior east to Acadia, or New Brunswick, and south along the Atlantic seaboard ), ‘Virginie’ (extends north and west beyond Illinois), and Floride (as the lower Mississippi); Lower California (‘I. Californie’) apparently an island off the coast of ‘Nouveau Mexique’; also Mexico (‘Nouvelle Espagne’), Central America, and the northern region of South America. For some reason, perhaps a blindness induced by imperial ambition, no mention is made of the well-established British colonies from Massachusetts south to New York and Virginia. The work of French cartographer Allain Manesson Mallet (1630- 1706) appears in the modestly titled Description de l’Universe (1683) and Les Travaux de Mars (1684). Wide left and lower… Read more

London, c. 1830. Sheet (37cm x 47cm), image (33cm x 41cm). A fine, colourful engraved map with decorative borders depicting much of present-day Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia. Showing details of James Bay, the five Great Lakes, the St. Lawrence River and the two maritime provinces, with the northeast U.S. sketched in. Good, wide margins (two small tears, repaired), neat central seam as issued. Date is approximate but close-- Toronto (so named in 1834) is shown as ‘York’ and Teesdale’s major work predates the name change. A bright, colourful map of early 19th century Canada which not much more than a dozen years before had withstood the American invasions of the war of 1812-1814. Ex Ruddell collection (November 2008). Simply mounted on white, acid-free mat.

Description:

Paris, 1757. Sheet (33cm x 24cm, irreg.), image (19cm x 30).  Engraving depicts the region of the lower St. Lawrence from just west of Quebec City, past Tadoussac, on out to the Gulf  as far as the western end of Anticosti Island. Cartouche with legend in rococco frame, a good dark impression locating the settlements and showing details of the tributaries of the lower valley. Likely from Prevost’s multi-volume Histoire Generale des Voyages (1746- 1757) for which Bellin prepared maps as Ingr. de la Marine’. Mildly age-toned, a single pin hole on a crease, reduced right margin. Quite a good impression on good 18th century paper with chains and wire, representative of Bellin’s accurate, detailed work.

Cities and political divisions typical of the region in the 18th century are also shown in some detail. The copperplate engraving is dark and clear. Generally, an attractive map of  Riesling country.

Description:

London, 1754. Sheet (30cm x 43cm), image (23.5cm x 35.5cm). Late in 1754, subsequent to his defeat at Fort Necessity in the Ohio country by a combined force of French and Canadians, George Washington published at Williamsburg The Journal of Major George Washington which gave an account of his venture into the western lands at the head of elements of the Virginia regiment and which, by implication, served as a defense of his conduct of the campaign (He was, after all, just twenty-one or so and had been captured together with his entire force). A short while later, the Journal was published at London, accompanied by this map by the well-known English cartographer Thomas Jefferys. According to one commentator the ‘map is apparently an enlarged version of an earlier map engraved by John Gibson with the same title... published in the London Magazine, June 1754’ (See ‘Maps Relating to Virginia in the Virginia State Library’ in Bulletin of the Virginia State Library 7, Nos. 2 and 3 (1914): 33-263… Read more

New York and London: Harper & Brothers, 1924. First edition, in two volumes (xvi, 368; viii, 365, adverts), with an Introduction by Albert Bigelow Paine. Large 8vo with Twain portraits as frontispieces with imprinted tissue guards. In BAL (3537) two states of the first edition are described without concluding which should be assigned precedence, saying, the ‘tentative’ sequence is ‘not firmly established.’ The differences between Variant A and Variant B reside in features of the second volumes, the first volumes being indistinguishable from each other. In particular, the frontispiece tissue guards in Variant A sometimes may be imprinted; whereas the frontispiece tissue guards in Variant B are always imprinted. According to BAL, however, the central distinguishing feature is that Variant A includes two pages of advertising bound in at the end of volume two, followed by a blank; Variant B is free of advertising, with two blank pages at the end of volume two.
