1861. Wraps. Brown calf wraps. Good. 28 pages. 5 pages pinned in. Handwritten recipe book, mainly baked goods. Most likely from the New York area as one pinned in recipe is written on a printed page from the Home Insurance Co. New York. One of the recipes is for Harrison Cake, a spice cake named for the ninth President of the United States. Recipes call for Saleratus or "aerated salt" which was a precursor to baking soda, used in American kitchens between 1840's and 1880's. Recipes for Indian pudding and Brown Bread call for Indian meal known today as cornmeal. Recipes include Lemon Pie, Hard Gingerbread, Hingham Cake, Currant Cake, White Mountain Cake, Dough Nuts, etc. Leather wraps are chipped and split. Pages toned.

Christiana : P. T. Mallings Boghandel, 1874. Hardcover. Marbled boards, leather spine. Good. Interesting and unusual repurposed grammar book that had a second life as a storehouse for recipes, pasted in, handwritten, as well as newspaper articles. Biddy Bye, a syndicated Woman's Page Editor, is identified as the author of some of these newspaper articles, which helps narrow the years this was being assembled to the mid 1910's. Boards cracked, nearly disbound.

Containing recipes for Pommes au Beurre, Falkland Pudding, Curried Potatoes, Claret Jelly, Brazilian Stew, Raspberry Acid, two Risotto recipes, plus many more. Laid/pasted in, Temples Black Salve; with "Sarsfield Pharmaceutical - Chemist Durham" stamp. Two contemporary penciled in names, most likely family member associations, and penciled in page numbers. 55 pages written, 104 blank. First page unattached.

Lamoille County, Vermont, 1830-137. Wraps. Orig. blue wraps. Good. 19 x 16 cm. Holographic account book of Salmon Brush (1804-1887). Brush, listed as "Physician" in the 1850 Federal Census, attended in 1832 Castleton Medical College, the first Medical School in Vermont. This account book is a combined record of the treatments he administered to patients, a general log of his employee's labor, and a family economic ledger. Listed here are three of Salmon's brothers - Silas W., Orlen B., and Abner. Silas seems to have worked for a time for Salmon, and an accounting of "Pasturing" by family members indicates one of the primary uses of family land. Brush was also listed in the Federal Census as the U.S. Postmaster of Lamoille County from 1851-1854. Wraps chipped and worn.

Recipes of distinguished Physicians of the United States, Copied Verbatim, By J(?) M.B.(early form of M.D.) An intriguing record of remedies attributed to Nathan Smith (1762-1829), founder of the Dartmouth Medical School, cofounder of the University of Vermont College of Medicine, the medical school at Bowdoin College, and the Yale School of Medicine. Additional remedies credited to: Dr. Beach, Dr. Benton, Wm. P. Dawes, Prof. Warren, Prof. Biglow, Dr. Knight, Dr. Jackson, Dr. Burns, Dr. Ives, Dr. Rogers, Dr. Richard Creel, Dr. S. Hanson, Dr. Dorsey, and Dr. Josua Fisher. Remedies are neatly numbered and written in ink. First page with considerable loss, pages stained, stitching holding well.

Six page menu featuring Cocktails, American Dishes, Chinese Dishes, and an architectural plan. The New Shanghai Cafe was an offshoot of the herbalist guru Fong Yan's empire of clubs, restaurants, and Chinese herb shop. Fong Wan, originally from Guangdong Province in China, successfully branded himself, putting his name and picture in advertisements at a time when Asians were largely kept on the margins of society. The rear page of the menu contains an outline of the corporation's business plan to expand the restaurant with an architectural rendering on the following page. Light toning to edges, previously folded, otherwise clean.

1956-1974. Cards. 80 daily menus from Cafe Au Pere de Nico in Chelsea, London, signed by visiting luminaries from world leaders to icons of the entertainment world, displayed in the cafe for two decades between 1956 and 1974. Together with a sketch by Paul Winner of the restaurant's interior, inscribed by Winner and dated August 18th, 1973. At the end of the 1960's and the beginning of the 1970's, Au Pere de Nico was the Chelsea restaurant to see and be seen by London society and the "Court Crowd" from The Royal Court Theatre. Menus were hand made on a daily basis, each with the given day's date printed at the top, making for an interesting time-stamp for each autographed menu. Before the Great Depression and the stock market crash in October, 1929, the Royal Hawaiian Hotel brought the well heeled swells, who steamed their way to this haven for sun, fun, and golf. Dinner menu plus a note "to our patrons" including: "A visit to the Hawaiian Pineapple Company's cannery can be arranged through the front office", and Event of the Day: "Hawaiian Concert, Coconut Grove at 8:30 P.M." Color illustrated throughout with a bird's eye view of the Royal Hawaiian and Moana Hotels on the beach at Waikiki on the cover. 1 cm closed tear on front and back cover. Dinner service was a sumptious event with a multitude of choices including soup, fish, boiled: ham, tongue, turkey, and oysters, cold: ham, corned beef, lamb, side dishes: compote of pigeons, calves' feet, escolops of veal, stewed mutton, numerous vegetables, pastry, and dessert. The Wine List on the verso includes "American Wines" featuring "Kelley Island" which was a local wine, grown on the island, located in the western basin of lake Erie. Established in 1865, Kelley Island Wine Company produced champagne, Catawba and Reisling wines. Owner's signature at bottom of menu. Separate meal times listed for "Children and Nurses". Handwritten additions plus two items crossed out. Creases discernible otherwise crisp and clean.
