Munich: Edition X, 1994. Folio. Original brown boards, lettered in grey on spine. Double-thick pages, unopened but with blank inners. A fine copy in the original card slipcase. Twenty-seven images by Jon Groom. First edition, SIGNED BY THE ARTIST, AND WITH A CORRESPONDENCE FROM HIM LAID IN. This livre d'artiste, whose images accompany an English translation of Paul Valéry's essay L'Homme Et La Coquille, was issued in two series of 115 copies, one in English and one in German. This is an unnumbered, hors de commerce copy from the English series. Very scarce: only one copy shows in institutional libraries [Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, Munich]. The accompanying correspondence runs to four items, all from the early 1990s: two handwritten postcards, and two ALS on Groom's distinctive notepaper. The recipient of all four was David Gothard, co-founder of the Riverside Studios in London. In 1978 the Riverside staged Groom's first solo exhibition, and the following year Groom worked as a carpenter there to…

London: Faber, 1965. 8vo, pp. 186. Original blue boards, lettered in gilt on spine. Preliminaries age-toned and spotted, spine ends a little rubbed and worn, otherwise a near fine copy in a good only, price-clipped dustwrapper, inner and outer tape reinforcements to spine and spine ends, heavily rubbed and worn with some loss to corners. First edition, sixth impression, INSCRIBED IN 1968 TO TONY HANCOCK BY TED NOFFS, FOUNDER OF THE WAYSIDE CHAPEL, SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA: 'To my good friend Tony Hancock from Ted Noffs 1968.' In 1968, his life and career chasing each other ever downwards, Tony Hancock travelled to Australia to make a television series he hoped would rescue both. But the show was doomed from the start: poor scripts and the star's rampant alcoholism combined to catastrophic effect and, with only three of the projected eight episodes completed, Hancock killed himself with an overdose of barbiturates. Shortly after his arrival in Australia Hancock had been introduced to Ted Noffs, a…

Description:
London: T. Werner Laurie, N.d. [1910]. 8vo, pp. 251, 4pp. advertisements bound in at rear. Illustrated boards, lettered in black to front panel and spine. Boards a little darkened and with some rubbing to spine ends, but a very well preserved copy. First edition. After early employment as a governess and actress, Florence Warden [1957-1929] settled down to an extremely prolific career as a popular novelist, turning her hand to mystery, murder, romance and ghost stories with equal facility. (Miss Ferriby's Clients, set in an apparently haunted house and featuring seances, robbery and murder, is typical of Warden's output.) Her work was in huge demand through subscription libraries, and at her peak she was publishing as many as eight novels a year. By the time of her death in 1929 she had published more than one hundred and fifty novels. A very well preserved copy, and now scarce. HUBIN, p. 425

New York: Doubleday, Doran, 1942. 8vo, pp. 300. Original dark red boards, lettered in black to spine, and with line drawing in black to front panel and spine. Leading edge uncut. Illustrated dustwrapper. Preliminaries a little browned, but a near fine copy in a defective dustwrapper, bottom half of spine missing, front panel detached from spine and held in place by protective wrapper. Dustwrapper illustration by Donald McKay. First edition, preceding its UK counterpart by more than four years. 'I'm so glad you liked Money In The Bank. The only novel, I should imagine, that has ever been written in an internment camp. I did it at the rate of about a page a day in a room with over fifty men playing cards and ping-pong and talking and singing. The first twelve chapters were written in a whirl of ping-pong balls. I suppose on an average morning I would get from fifteen to twenty on the side of the head just as I was searching for the mot juste.' (PGW to Bill Townend, 11 May 1942) McIlvaine A64a

London: Herbert Jenkins, 1946. 8vo, pp. 253. Original red boards, lettered in black to front panel and spine, publisher's device in black to rear panel. Illustrated dustwrapper. Light spotting to edges of text block, but a near fine copy in a near fine dustwrapper, with light wear to spine ends and folds. Dustwrapper illustration by Frank Ford. First UK edition. The first edition of this title appeared in the US more than four years earlier. Having made catastrophically ill-advised broadcasts on German radio while held prisoner, the suspicion grew in Britain that Wodehouse had collaborated in order to escape internment, and his publishers were understandably wary.
