Description:
William Heinemann. First trade edition published by William Heinemann in 1912. The play made its debut on the stage in 1903. Maugham got 150 copies of his play printed in 1903 to give it out on opening night and as working copies for the actors. This first trade edition appeared in 1912 in wraps and this hardback edition. This copy is in very good condition. The boards have a couple of bumps along the right hand side edge of the front board. The spine is faded. There is a light mark to the front board. Otherwise the boards and pages are clean and there are no other marks, bookplates, foxing or ink. It is at least a very good copy overall. The author, W. Somerset Maugham has inscribed to the front free end paper "For Robert Loraine, from his friend the author". Robert Bilcliffe Loraine was a stage actor and producer. He appeared in one of Somerset Maugham's plays "Smith" in 1909 and from the inscription seemed to be on very good terms with him. Loraine would also go on… Read More

Description:
William Heinemann. London: William Heinemann (1935). First UK edition of this classic anti-war novel with the striking dust wrapper. It is in very good condition. The wrapper is mostly complete. There is wear to the corners and spine ends. There is a tear to the bottom of the spine that goes through the Heinemann logo although it is firmly attached and presents well in brodart. The book itself is very clean, sturdy and square with no foxing or other marks. Overall a very good copy. The author worked as an official war correspondent during the war. He wrote many novels of note during the 20's and 30's but became preoccupied with his hatred of war and violence. He then released this, his polemic on the first world war, released at a time when the second world war appeared increasingly likely.  . Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 1935.

Jonathan Cape. London: Jonathan Cape, 1988 Large 8vo., red publisher's boards lettered in gilt to spine with publisher's device to foot; in the original pictorial dust wrapper designed by Quentin Blake; pp. [vi], 7-237, [iii]; with numerous in-text illustrations by Blake; a near-fine copy with some minor bumps to the upper edge of rear board; light compression to spine tips and evidence of a book-plate or sticker excised from the ffep; exceptionally clean, otherwise, in the like dust jacket which is lightly creased to edges with a couple of small marks. First edition of this classic children's work, intended for export, without the price or barcode to the lower panel. Dahl was inspired to write Matilda after reading Hilaire Belloc's cautionary children's verses. In the original poem, the character is a wicked girl 'who tells dreadful lies' and uses her psychokinetic powers to help a teacher win money at horse racing. Over time, and after suggestions from the author's American editor, the character was… Read More
