Lister 221 The Handbook of India was originally published by John Murray in three volumes , for the Bombay, Madras, and Bengal Provinces. The first two volumes appeared in 1859 and the Bengal volume not until 1882. A fourth volume, dealing with the Panjab and North-West India, was added to them in 1883. They were all prepared by Captain E. B. Eastwick,M.P., who made long visits to India on the 1850's, 60's and 70's in order to collect the material for them on the spot.
