Description:
[New York]: [BBDO], 1949. Very good. Accordion-style folded scrapbook, with fore-edges taped, seemingly as issued. 73 panels used (one entire "side"). 72 handmade "get well soon" cards, with various mixed media used, but all done by hand. The cards are generally in excellent condition, though many (most?) have been loosened from the original glue, and are now laid-in at their places. None appear to be missing. The cards are all addressed to one Carol March, who seems to have been a well-liked employee of the pioneering advertising firm Batten, Barton, Durstine, and Osborn (BBDO). It's unquestionable that March worked in the Art or Creative department, as each of the cards is done with a distinct professionalism. While all of the cards have a warm tone, many have an element of mild bawdieness, with references to sex, alcohol, and other naughty topics. One "Bill Dec" has written a poem: "C is for the cigars you always gave me; S is for the many socks you've darned; R is for the rye you should be… Read More

Description:
[India?], 1970. Spiral bound. Fine. Oblong quarto, 18 leaves with 36 8x10 photographic prints (printed directly to card leaves). The images, which have no captions, seem to depict an American contingent inspecting an Indian manufacturing plant that is making refrigerators or similar appliances for the Kelvinator Company. Completely wordless, but still a clear enough record of an American company that had outsourced some of its operations somehwat earlier than most that followed. Well-preserved, in overall fine condition, despite some minor wear to the velvet album covers.

Description:
[Cincinnati]: Pollak Steel Company, 1919. Staplebound. Near fine. Quarto. 3 issues, 18pp., 18pp., 22pp., illustrated. All staple-bound, in original printed wrappers, with thecover of the December issue printed in several colors. All issues near fine, with mild isolated soiling to the covers, and an occasional tuny edge tear, but really a well-preserved group. A charming and engaging employee magazine for this Cincinnati-based steel company. The contents center on the lives and exploits of ordinary workers in the vast corporation, with photographs and descriptions of company-sponsored sporting events, leusire activities, and the like. There are a number of brief (often one-sentence) classified advertisements from various employees peppered thorughout (ex: "Wanted, A Wife. Good-looking, good cook, experienced in general housekeeping and sewing. State age and color. Apply Mr. Edgar Simpson, Electrical Department." Some unsigned poetry and occasional "Safety First-"style aphorisms also throughout.… Read More

[France]: [not published], 1749. Hardcover. Near fine. Small octavo, 188pp., illustrated with several engravings of notable philosophers. A finely bound manuscript, in full brown calf, with nicely tooled gilt spine, marbled endpapers, and gilt edges, very much in contemporary French style. A bound manuscript, entirely in French, probably copied from a textbook or a professor's lecture notes, concerning principles of logic and basic philosophy. Description:
New York: Case Tiffany and Company, 1851. Very good +. Hand-colored map, printed on tissue. Some gentle foxing to the extremities, and a few very tiny tears, but an attractive copy of this fragile, nicely-colored map, which depicts a swiftly-changing frontier in the American West. While this seems to be the earliest obtainable impression of the map, OCLC locates a single holding of a map with the same imprint dated 1850. The map was reprinted a few times over the next few years. A very handsome, frameable map of the growing and fracturing United States a decade before the Civil War.

Description:
London: Henry Renshaw, 1873. Second Edition. Flexible boards. Very good-. Octavo, 180pp., plus advertisements at rear and printed to the endpapers. A fragile volume; about very good in the publisher's red cloth over flexible boards. Front gutter partially exposed, but still holding. Final gathering partly loosened, but also still holding. There is moderate underlining throughout the book, but most interesting are a couple dozen leaves of significant marginalia, in which the reader synthesizes and restates, sometimes verbatim, significant passages from the text. In a few places, the reader has wholly restated or summarized information that he/she found significant. The person's name in written in large crayon on the front paste-down, but is essentially illegible.

Description:
[Cleveland and elsewhere], 1939. String binding. Very good +. Oblong quarto. 163 photographs, nearly all measuring about 2.75" x 4.5", including white borders. Most photographs are laid in to corner mounts, some of which are missing. Most, though not all, of the photographs are captioned in white ink on the album leaves, and there are sometimes further details inked or typed on the verso of the prints. (Some of those lacking album captions have some identifying notations on the verso). Apart from occasional age-toning or a few mild stains, the photographs are in excellent condition; very good or better. Some minor mold/soiling to the album boards and extremities. A focused, detailed, and well-composed group of identified images which offer a close-up of working life on the Great Lakes on the eve of World War II. The album's compiler was a young woman who was engaged to a crew member of the SS Yosemite. For whatever reason, she was able to join her beau for a summer on the ship, and used her keen… Read More

Southington, CT: Hazard, 1890. Very good. One cabinet card, measuring about 6.5" x 4.25". Though the mount is meant for a portrait-oriented image, this photograph is in oblong format. Some spotting to the edges of the photograph, but still a clear image, on a clean mount - overall very good. The image depicts an adult woman with clearly deformed hands and arms, and possibly without legs. There is a large hand-cranked metal device connected to a series of ropes, which are tied to parts of the mattress. The device must have served the purpose of moving the mattress so that she could sit up or lay down. An interesting cabinet photograph with interesting medical and technology content.

In overall good condition only, withtwo tack holes (one in the photograph), and some glue/lifting residue on the reverse. Whole mount is gently and evenly curled. Reverse also bears a stamp reading: "As seen with Walter L. Main Circus - 1902." Image somewhat overexposed, but still clear. The image itself does not seem to show Lalloo's deformity, which was the "attraction" exploited by P. T. Barnum - a parasitic twin portruding from his abdomen.

Boston: D. Hooton, Printer, 1830. Broadsheet. Near fine. One broadside, measuring about 8.5" x 12.5", including margins. A nice example of a medical broadside, which advertises the efficacy of Dr. Ward's Vegetable Asthmatic Pills, which of course cure almost everything. In very near fine condition, just trivially age-toned around the ink as one would tend to expect, but with no notable tears or creases. An unusually well-preserved example. OCLC records a decent number of holdings, and there appear to have been two editions. This one, which has the printer listed at 13 Merchant's Hall, would seem to date it to 1834 (according to catalog information in accession number 191243417).

Boston: Dr. E. Hartshorn & Sons, 1890. First Edition (?). Broadside. Fine. One broadside, measuring about 9.75" x 13". One or two trivial nicks to the extremities, but a fine example, never folded. Undated, but based on the paper and Hartshorn's printed address, likely dating from the last decade of the 19th century. Promotes a typical snake oil cure-all, complete with testimonials from all over New England. Description:
Mexico City: National Revolutionary Party Foreign Information Bureau, 1937. First Edition. Staplebound. Near fine. Square octavo, 20pp. A near fine copy in the publisher's printed stapled wraps with woodcut illustration. Old flattened crease through the middle of the document, else a very nice copy printed on cheap, evenly age-toned paper. A scarce propaganda document printed in English during the middle of socialist Mexican President Lazaro Cardenas's land reforms. Quite a large portion of the land expropriated by Cardenas to Mexican peasants was American-owned, and thus the relationship between the two nations grew strained. The main text of the document prints a speech given by Cardenas on 12/1/1936, celebrating the supposed completion of land reforms in the Laguna region. OCLC locates perhaps a dozen copies of this pamphlet, curiously all in the United States and the UK. A highly ephemeral item, quite scarce in commerce, and likely moreso in this condition.

Description:
[Geauga County, OH], 1960. Self-wrappers. Very good. Octavo, [4pp.]. Folded program in self-wrappers. Old folds, minor discoloration, and a few edge nicks, but a very good example of this mimeographed program for a school booster function. Though this production took place in 1960 in a suburb of Cleveland, a major American city, the content is rather shocking, including a presumably all-white cast performing a "minstrel show," with characters named Bones, Tambo, Sassafrass, Amos, and the like. The second half of performances (the "Variety Show") includes something called the "Nairobi Trio." A highly ephemeral little program, offering a glimpse into the stubborn staying power of minstrel performance in 20th century white culture, well into the Civil Rights Movement.

Description:
[various places], 1947. A full-to-bursting photograph album, bound in tan suede and string-bound, measuring about 13" x 9.5". 732 photographs on 89 album pages. Photographs vary in size, but are nearly all in the snapshot category, smaller than 4" x 4". The photographs are uniformly in excellent condition; nearly all of them are inserted into clear corner mounts. May of these mounts are aprtly torn or cracked, and the glue from the mounts has occasionally bled onto the photos, making them hard to lift. Nevertheless, the contents are very nearly displayed, and in near fine overall condition. The vast majority of photographs have captions, though many of these are inked on the versos of the snapshots. A smaller, but significant number of captions are neatly inked on the album leaves. At rear are ten leaves of ephemera and paperwork related to the compiler's service in the R. A. F., and some other souvenir ephemera, which is discussed in more detail below. The compiler has also added a brass R. A. F.… Read More

Fairmont, West Virginia: Houston Studio, 1930. First Edition. Very good. One albumen print photograph with thin black border, about 10" x 8", backed onto linen. In very good condition, with some creases, nicks, and very minor discoloration at the extremities, but generally preserved. The photograph is somewhat mysterious, depicting a group of fourteen young boys and girls, another nine who are a few years older, and two male adults. In front of the group are four briefcases. As best we can tell, these are labeled "Miner's First Aid Cabinet," and the logo appears to be that of the Mine Safety Appliances Company. Perhaps these were young miners and first aid nurses in training, or maybe it was a summer camp. Regardless, a nicely sized image which captures youth life in coal country during the height of the coal boom in early 20th century America.
