Description:
Orig. pub. Spartanburg 1981. Reprinted 1989, 1993, 1996. Print on Demand Edition 2018. (vi), 143 pp., index This volume consists of marriage and death notices from the three Baptist newspapers which were published in South Carolina before and during the Civil War. The Southern Baptist and General Intelligencer or later The Southern Watchman and General Intelligencer (1835-1837), The Southern Baptist (1847-1860), and The Confederate Baptist (1862-1865). The first two were published in Charleston and the last was published in Columbia. As the compiler, professional genealogist Brent H. Holcomb, notes "references to 'this city' should be noted appropriately." Although the Biblical Recorder gives its dateline as both Raleigh and Charleston, it was actually published in Raleigh and has not been included in this publication. The notices themselves pertain mainly to South Carolinians or persons with strong South Carolina connections. Of much interest are notices of persons who had removed to other states,…

Description:
n.p.n.d., Reprinted 1976, 1988. Print on Demand Edition 2011. (iii), 245 pp., new index Brief historical sketches and rolls and rosters of military organizations in the service of the Confederacy from the state of Mississippi are included in this book compiled by a member of the 10th Mississippi Regiment. This is a compilation of several newspaper sketches of Mississippi's military contributions to the Civil War effort. Some regiments are covered in chronological order with muster rolls, lists of engagements, and narrative reports, when available. While certainly not a complete state history, this primary source material has value and should not be overlooked. A comprehensive new index has been added to this reprint edition.

Description:
Orig. pub. 1908. Reprinted 1978, 1988. Print on Demand Edition 2011. (vii), 650 pp., new intro., new index This "classic study of Mississippi's military heritage" is the result of "a monumental task of locating, identifying, arranging, editing and publishing," performed by Dunbar Rowland, then director of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. It is primarily concerned with the Civil War, but all wars and campaigns from 1803 to 1898 are included. Each war is accorded a separate chapter, then subdivided into histories of each military unit. The sources included original manuscript rolls, minutes of military boards, order books, correspondence, diaries, scrap books, official reports, military telegrams, registers of appointments, newspaper files, military service blanks, interviews with soldiers, miscellaneous collections of military papers, and printed sources. Questionnaires distributed to Mississippi's veterans yielded valuable information that would otherwise have been lost. The new…

Print on Demand Edition 2011. vi, xxiii, 591 pp., illus., new intro., new index This classic work by "the Father of Mississippi History" is considered by the Mississippi Historical Society to be the best of the early histories. Claiborne, a congressman, newspaper editor, and member of a family which played an important part in the affairs of the state, used as sources original manuscripts, newspapers, books, government records, personal reminiscences of prominent men, and his own personal observations. Contents include a narrative history of Mississippi from the earliest European explorations of the area and the establishment of the earliest settlements, through the creation of the Territory in 1797 and admission into the Union as a state in 1817. Mississippi Indians, including the Choctaw, Chickasaw, Biloxi, Natchez, Cherokee, Creek, and Yazoo tribes receive considerable mention. Biographies of prominent early Mississippians are an important feature of the…
