Orginal German manuscript [ca. 1650] for printed text of JUNGENICKEL ANDREAS und MARTIN STIER Schlüssel zur Mechanica, Das ist: Gründliche Beschreibung der Vier Haupt Instrumenten der Machination, als deß Hebels, Getriebs, Schrauben, Kloben..(1661). Folio. Modern vellum on boards. The German text written in ink in fine hand contains numerous drawings of mechanical devices or principles. The water marks on the laid paper are from around 1650. The text is a discussion between an engineer (Ingenier) and a mechanic (Mechanico) presented as numbered couplets. The engineer poses a question to the mechanic who replies. The reply is complemented with illustration(s). We coud not find any record of a manuscript for this work by Andrea Jugenickels which was published posthumously. Collation of this text against a digitized copy of the published work provided proof that this is a working copy of, if not, the uneditied original manuscript for the publication. The ... Read more

The text page gives a description and name of all the parts of the Vickers machine gun. Each part is numbered in the text and on the drawing of the machine gun in the first double page drawing on the next page and following single page drawing. The remaining pages are organized as plates I-VIII. Every part illustrated has each component of the part labeled in French. Any person can use this manuscript to know each and every part of the gun to the point that they could disassemble and assemble it without error. Linnaeus had extensive knowledge on medicine and of plants and their medicinal properties, many growing in his own garden. Contemporray full calf with modern rebacking. Spine has raised bands and blank panels. A new morocco label with gilt labeling in second panel. Covers are worn along the edges. Boards have double line tooling along edges and flora stamp at corners. There is age browning along edge of front free end paper and first two leaves, true for rear of book. The internal text is very good with usual minor aging. There are three folding charts and three pages with ink marginal notes in English. There is the bookplate of "Henry Harcourt Horn" on front pastedown and ink signature of "John Head" on title page. This is a reissue of the 1681 publication in Leyden with the addition of a new title page and errata on page 2 of text.

The spine has green morocco label with author, title and date in gilt. Collation: [iv] 1-126 [2-ad for present book by Le Begue] pp. + 3 folding copper engraved plates. There is repair to the title page where a portion of the lower right corner is missing. A piece of light brown paper has been pasted on the verso of the title page and the fore edge reinforced with a strip of paper on verso. This is a large paper, uncut copy that is very clean. The only exception is a brown paper flaw on p. 13/14 at the lower edge of the last text line. There is a repair to a tear into the plate area of the second plate.
