The photographer Cuny Janssen travelled to Macedonia in the wake of the conflict between that country and Albanian rebels over the redrawing of Macedonia's boundaries. Gerry Badger and Martin Parr note in The Photobook: A History Volume II. , "This is a subtle book about the aftermath of conflict. Along with the children's portraits on each facing page Janssen places photographs of the Macedonian landscape, so that the book can be read from either orientation. … Like the portraits the landscapes are neutral in tone, but not cold and distant. First edition, number 2 of 310 copies of this binding variant (50 bound in quarter goatskin, 40 unbound sheets). This trilogy evokes three periods in the history of the Welsh town. The Welsh Rebellion against the English of the early 15th century, the present situation of 1991, and Y Dyfodol/The Future imagines Machynlleth as the capital of the Welsh Republic celebrating an anniversary.

A single leaf, folded; purple ink printed in pink paper-stock; pp. [4]; engraved illustration to front panel; small holes to fold, from a previous binding, with light discolouration to this area; a small portion missing of lower portion of fold, a good example of early Victorian medical ephemera. This magnetic electric corset contraption promises to cure 'weak back' as well as a whole host of other medical conditions. Designed 'for those distressing disorders peculiar to the Female Sex designated as Ladies' ailments' (p. [3]).

Original green cloth, gilt; pp. x, 32; frontis. of spectrum scales, title-page vignette Woodbury-type photograph from a drawing by Smyth, 18 spectroscopic plates at rear; soiled, else a very good copy with the bookplate of Dudley Observatory, Albany, N.Y. First edition. Piazzi Smyth, the Astronomer-Royal for Scotland, became interested in spectroscopy as a tool in astrophysics during the 1870s. He worked in this discipline using instruments purchased at his own expense, and transported them to viewing locations in Lisbon and, later, Madeira, for the purposes of observation. One of his aims, successfully carried out, was to discriminate in the sun's spectrum between absorption lines of purely solar origin and those produced in the earth's atmosphere. The present work, sumptuously produced at great expense, records his findings from observations made in Madeira in 1881.

Gavin Young's copy with a compliments slip from the publisher loosely inserted inscribed "With the compliments of Didier Millet". Young has made an ink correction on p. 96. With this copy is an early 38 page typescript of Young's essay with numerous corrections by the author in blue ink. The final printed version has further changes from this draft. Colour-lithographed educational poster, 86 x 98 cm; tiny brown traces of humidity to lower margin, reaching up to 9 mm into the paper; unpacked from the original cardboard roll, with the same trace of humidity. An unusually large and well-preserved depiction of the extinct relative of the elephant. Pfizenmayer had led expeditions to north-west Siberia in 1901-2 and 1908 in search of mammoth remains, and published the first proper scientific book on the mammoth.

First edition of these fascinating and artistic photographic portraits of New Zealand Aborigines, all people photographed in front of vernacular architecture, carved panels, and in traditional costumes. The 'permanent Carbonette photos' are remarkably well printed, very sharp and with good tonal range. Thomas Pringle (1858-1931) was a member of the Wellington Photographic Association and subsequently employed by the newly formed Department of Tourism which then became The National Publicity Studios. The decorative map can be dated by the southernmost point of the railway along the Nile: Girga. In 1896 the railway was extended further to Nag Hammadi.

Large colour-lithographic folding map (158 by 94cm) dissected into 30 segments, linen-backed and folding back into the original cloth-covered slip-case with printed label on the front; apart from light rubbing to front cover, in excellent condition. A wonderful copy of this Special Edition of the 'reduced' version of Conder & Kitchener's huge Map of Western Palestine, which consists of 26 sheets and is ordinarily found bound in atlas format. The present example of the map is heavily revised to illustrate the drainage of the Mountain Ranges in the eastern part of the map, "according to 'An Introduction to the Survey of Western Palestine' by Trelawney Sanders." Sanders did several adaptations of this map, one of which included ancient geographical information. Lithographic map with borders hand-coloured in outline (c. 44 x 53cm), linen-backed at the time; one vertical fold, light offsetting from the original printed folder (not present). The Crimean War necessitated this map of the Balkan's, a part of Europe not well known to the British public.

Large lithographic map, hand-coloured in outline, measuring 83 by 113 cm, linen-backed in 32 segments, folding back into the original cloth folder in 8vo with printed title label; spine of folder renewed; from Manchester Public Libraries with their bookplate inside front cover, gilt-stamp on front cover, lending slip (one stamp of 1941) on the verso of one segment, otherwise very good. First edition. The inset map shows The Russian Concession on the Liao Tung Peninsula. The transport links (rivers, railways, the Trans-Siberian in particular), are boldly printed. This is probably one of the best - and quite scarce - Russo-Japanese War maps covering the entire region affected by the conflict, from North Korea to just south of Khabarovsk, and Beijing to Vladivostok, including large parts of Mongolia.
