This is a very scarce program for the 1st American performance of the opera "MADAM BUTTERFLY" by Giacomo Puccini. The title page of the program states: "First Performance in America and First Presentation in English on October 15th, 1906, at the Columbia Theatre, Washington, D.C." Published by Boosey & Co., New York.Puccini wrote five versions of the opera. The original two-act version, which was presented at the world premiere at La Scala on 17 February 1904, was withdrawn after the disastrous premiere. Puccini then substantially rewrote it, this time in three acts. This second version[was performed on 28 May 1904 in Brescia, where it was a great success. It was this second version that premiered in the United States in 1906, first in Washington, D.C., in October, and then in New York in November, performed by Henry Savage's New English Opera Company (so named because it performed in English-language translations).Condition:Mostly clean covers and spine with only a few small stains to top edge of… Read More

Description:
This is an antique book about Mark Twain's days in Bermuda, "Mark Twain and The Happy Island" by Elizabeth Wallace. 1913 1st edition, 1st printing; A.C. McClurg & Co.; Chicago. The book is nicely illustrated with numerous photographs. Please see the photos for the complete list of contents. From the Introduction: "This little story of 'The Happy Island' has a place of its own in Mark Twain literature, in that it presents an idyllic picture of our philosopher-humorist in the serener days of his later life - a picture of which the author herself was a part. Mark Twain always loved Bermuda, from the first day of his visit, to that last day of his final visit, when he sailed away, with the shadows already gathering just ahead. Miss Wallace's story is a tender one, showing him still full of life and health, and of that gracious sympathy with childhood which was always one of his chief characteristics and added comfort to his later years. The world will be the better and Mark Twain's memory the sweeter for… Read More

Nice condition copy of "A Masque of Reason" by ROBERT FROST with original dust jacket. 1945 1st edition, 1st printing (stated); Henry Holt and Company; New York. The dust jacket is un-clipped with the original $2.00 price intact on the front flap, and comes with a clear protective sleeve (not shown). From the dust jacket: "This new poem by Robert Frost...is a literary event of major importance. In a Masque of Reason, Frost...is witty and charitable, mocking and affectionate, as many-faceted and sharp-edged as a diamond. He is at the same time detached and benevolent, ironic and warm-hearted - an attitude toward mankind that springs from his inexhaustible faith in the mind and spirit of the individual. Mr. Frost's flexible blank verse, heightened but never far from natural speech, sparkles with audacity and wit. The freshness and vitality of this play are communicated by the most casual reading. With each rereading the total import deepens and widens, for this extraordinary poem constitutes a still… Read More

Description:
This is a lot of 2 first edition plays by ROBERT FROST; each comes with its original dust jacket:A MASQUE OF REASON - 1945 1st edition, 1st printing (stated); Henry Holt and Company; New York. This short play purports to be chapter 43 of the book of Job, which only has 42 chapters. Thus, Frost has written a concluding chapter in the form of the play. In this play, Frost - like John Milton in Paradise Lost - wants to justify God's ways to man. This play is not of high quality because of the use of slang language and his shallow view of divine nature and human nature.A MASQUE OF MERCY - 1947 1st edition, 1st printing (stated); Henry Holt and Company; New York.In the last few years Robert Frost has been occupied with a particularly stimulating subject, and one which lends itself well to the dramatic framework of the masque. Broadly, this is a concern with man's attitude towards God. In his earlier A Masque of Reason, the discussion centered around a particular aspect of the relationship between God and… Read More
